The CW

Like vampires themselves, “The Vampire Diaries” has proven itself timeless to fans — but that doesn’t necessarily mean every season of the beloved CW series holds up. From its spellbinding start in 2009 to its final farewell in 2017, the Nina Dobrev/Ian Somerhalder/Paul Wesley supernatural love triangle enthralled a die-hard base with its roller-coaster ride of big plot twists about Elena Gilbert, Damon Salvatore, and Stefan Salvatore.

Based on the popular YA novel series of the same name by L.J. Smith, “The Vampire Diaries” TV show was developed by writer/producer Kevin Williamson, who proved to have the Midas Touch with iconic youth-focused entertainment like “Dawson’s Creek” and the “Scream” movie franchise. The eight-season series centered around the bloodsucking Salvatore brothers and their interest in Elena (Nina Dobrev).

Whether you’re a curious first-timer or a “TVD” aficionado, we’re here with a breakdown and ranking of all eight seasons of “The Vampire Diaries.” So sit back, relax, and prepare to debate which Salvatore brother really deserved to be with Elena in the end.

8. Season 7

Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore and Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore face off on Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries.
The CW

After Nina Dobrev’s departure at the end of Season 6 of “The Vampire Diaries,” it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Season 7 just didn’t have the same magic as the earlier years. Once Elena’s character exited, the show set off in a new direction that never quite clicked without the long-running female protagonist at the center, leaving Damon and Stefan struggling to carry things on their own.

New characters and gimmicky narrative devices were added, including the arrival of Damon and Stefan’s mother Lily (Annie Wersching) alongside the Heretics. That storyline landed with a confusing thud, as did the introduction of flash-forwards. Instead of building one compelling central conflict, the season bounced between too many different angles, resulting in a narrative that often felt scattered rather than cohesive.

While Season 7 wasn’t an unwatchable disaster, it definitely took the series to a new low, feeling more like a primetime emotional support blanket than must-see TV. Yes, the fictional town of Mystic Falls was still standing, but the show’s soul had clearly departed.

7. Season 8

Caroline, Damon, and Stefan on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

The frenetic final season of “The Vampire Diaries” included a build-up to a wedding and the return of a beloved character, but watching Stefan marry Caroline and bringing back Elena for an episode wasn’t enough to save the show — or even give it the ending it deserved. Still, that didn’t stop the cast and showrunners from spinning Season 8 as wrapping up the series on their own terms rather than jumping ship before the plug would inevitably be pulled due to low ratings.

Many fans were left disappointed with the ending, which included Stefan dying and Damon and Elena being married in a flash-forward. It was an especially frustrating end to some because Damon and Stefan spent much of the season apart or under some sort of spell, taking away any semblance of the brotherly back-and-forth that helped define the series.

While it could be argued that the series finale delivered emotional moments and satisfying farewells, the season as a whole struggled with weak storylines, relying heavily on nostalgia, and tying everything up with a neat bow.

6. Season 4

Elena and Damon on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

This season of “The Vampire Diaries,” which came at the height of the series’ popularity, was also one of the most polarizing; some people loved it, and some people didn’t. We’re going to defend the latter, mainly because the show lost its footing a little when Kevin Williamson stepped down as showrunner at the end of Season 3. (He eventually returned to co-write the series finale alongside Julie Plec.)

While Season 4 wasn’t terrible, it never quite reached the heights of the earlier seasons. The biggest storyline shakeup, of course, was that mortal Elena transitioned into a vampire, changing the whole scope of her character. It’s also the season she dumped Stefan for Damon, upsetting some viewers appeasing others.

Despite all of that, there were still plenty of entertaining moments, with Klaus stealing scenes and Stefan’s doppelganger Silas being set up for an intriguing future storyline. Overall, the season had flashes of greatness, but the bumps it hit trying to iron out the details without Williamson at the helm could be felt.

5. Season 5

Elena and Damon on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

With Season 5, “The Vampire Diaries” seemed to be finding its balance again, lulling fans into a sense of relief. That said, there were a few hiccups, like the convoluted Travelers arc. Still, the episodes shined when they focused on the characters rather than the mythology, like the challenges Damon and Elena’s relationship faced and Stefan struggling to rediscover himself after being trapped and impersonated by Silas.

Meanwhile, Season 5 gave us Katherine’s biggest storyline to date, solidifying her as one of the season’s — and series’ — biggest sources of comic relief. After becoming human again for the first time in 500 years, watching the once fearless, manipulative vampire deal with hunger and vulnerability lead to some genuinely funny moments, with her constant complaints, sarcastic remarks, and a refusal to accept that she was no longer invincible. But with that mortality came death and a trip straight to hell; she wouldn’t be seen again until the series finale.

What lands Season 5 in its position is that it gave long-time “TVD” fans hope that the show still had life left, reminding fans why they became invested in Mystic Falls in the first place. For all its flaws, it recaptured some of the show’s original magic.

4. Season 6

Elena on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

This was easily the strongest back-end season of “The Vampire Diaries,” proving the show could still surprise fans even after six years. Rather than overloading episodes with confusing mythology, the storylines in Season 6 focused on compelling relationships among the core characters, like Stefan and Caroline’s slow-building romance, and the continued ups and downs of Damon and Elena’s relationship. The emotional moments felt earned instead of overly melodramatic.

Season 6 was also significant because it marked Nina Dobrev’s departure from the series, with a farewell that gave Elena an emotional sendoff while allowing longtime fans to reflect on just how much the character had grown since the pilot.

Season 6 served as a reminder of why “TVD” became such a fan favorite in the first place, with strong performances and memorable plot twists. It will forever be the last intact, truly enjoyable season of the beloved vampire show, deserving a rightful place in its history.

3. Season 1

Stefan and Elena on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

This is where it all started, folks — with a bang, no less. “The Vampire Diaries” premiere episode boasts the series’ best viewership ratings, with nearly 5 million people tuning in to the brand-new CW show on September 10, 2009, back when most people still actually had to watch TV in real time. In fact, it was the most-watched series premiere in the network’s history at the time.

Season 1 is certainly one of the most memorable. From the moment Stefan arrived in Mystic Falls and crossed paths with Elena, to Damon’s piercing blue eyes and scene-stealing performances, the series expertly balanced romance, dark humor, supernatural horror, and small-town secrets in a way that made it instantly addictive. Viewers quickly aligned with “Team Stelena” or “Team Delena” when it came to the love triangle between Elena and the Salvatore brothers — and became invested even in secondary characters like Caroline, Jeremy, and Alaric.

Yes, Season 1 laid the perfect foundation for “TVD,” making fans eager to return to Mystic Falls week after week. It was proof that one unforgettable premiere can spark a television phenomenon.

2. Season 3

Stefan and Klaus on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

“The Vampire Diaries” reached another level in Season 3, especially with Stefan spending much of the season as Klaus’ reluctant “Ripper” sidekick and enforcer, forcing fans to watch their favorite brooding bloodsucker embrace his dark side.

It gave Paul Wesley some of his strongest material in the entire series, and was enthralling in a way that really shook things up. Elena refused to give up on Stefan, Damon stepped into the role of protector, and the love triangle became more complicated than ever, with ravenous “Stelena” and “Delena” fans both being fed in equal measure.

Beyond romance, Season 3 expanded the “TVD” mythology in a big way. The Originals became fully realized characters, Klaus’ hybrid army threatened everyone in Mystic Falls as Stefan struggled to reclaim his humanity, and high school history teacher-turned-unforgiving vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman emerged as one of the show’s most unexpected Big Bads. The season capped it all off by killing Elena, only to bring her back as the one thing she’d spent the entire run of the show trying not to become — a vampire.

1. Season 2

Damon and Stefan on The Vampire Diaries
The CW

Season 2 was where “The Vampire Diaries” hit its stride with the perfect mix of spot-on storytelling, back-and-forth romance, quippy one-liners, and “WTF just happened?!” moments. It was the season that showed us who Katherine Pierce really was in all her manipulative glory, proving she was more than just Elena’s look-alike. It was also the season in which Damon professed his love for Elena, even if he immediately compelled her to forget that confession.

Some of the best character makeovers happened during this time, with Damon starting to soften a little behind those smoldering eyes, Caroline going from high-maintenance cheerleader to one of the most fearless vampires in Mystic Falls, and Tyler triggering a family curse that transitions him into a werewolf. The “TVD” mythology also got a glow-up with the introduction of the Originals and a non-stop delivery of unpredictably delectable chaos that kept fans hooked from start to finish week after week.

Season 2 really had it all. It was messy, dramatic, and completely addictive, never worrying about slowing down. It was “The Vampire Diaries” at its very best, proving that when the show was at its peak, there was nothing else quite like it on television.
