Mychal Threets has checked himself into a hospital.
The 36-year-old librarian and Reading Rainbow star took to Threads this week to share that he’s not doing alright and is seeking help.
“I am not okay. Maybe I’ll never be okay. I’m seeking help. Going to the [hospital] tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace,” Mychal wrote on Monday (August 17).
He added, “No matter what happens to me I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you.”
Actress Yvette Nicole Brown responded to his post, writing, “If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.”
Earlier this year, Mychal opened up about navigating being in the spotlight.
“I’m still a very introverted person,” he told People in January. “I think because of what’s happened in life, I’ve become more extroverted. I’ve been more comfortable talking about the library, talking about library stories, talking about mental health, just because I love it all. But had I known all this was going to happen, I probably would’ve never started posting.”
“I still have hard days and I’d much rather be behind the scenes,” Mychal shared. “But for a chance to amplify libraries, amplify people’s stories — essentially, I serve almost as a narrator of library joy, and I’m honored to do it.”
He also noted that books, family, and friends have been his saving grace.
“If it wasn’t for books, for my family, my friends and libraries and wonderful people, I wouldn’t be here today,” he said. “It’s because of things I’ve learned from my favorite characters, authors and illustrators, and just accepting that books will always love me even when I don’t love myself.”
