Giuliana Rancic is un-fuzzing Jerry O’Connell‘s memory about their horrible split over two decades ago!
Last week, the actor appeared on the Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast, where he confirmed he broke up with the former E! News host over an intercom but doesn’t “recall [his] exact wording.” But Giuliana remembers all too well what happened! She opened up about the end of their relationship in her 2015 memoir Going Off Script, saying Jerry told her:
“Nope, sorry, homegirl. Things change, but you take care, OK?”
Although Jerry doesn’t remember saying that, as we said, he admitted to the terrible way he called things off with Giuliana! And to make it worse? He only broke up with her over the intercom because he had another woman inside his place at the time! Yikes!

Word got back to Giuliana last week that he confessed all this, but she claimed she wanted to set the record straight on her own podcast — especially on some deets he had been “fuzzy” on.
Well, y’all, she delivered! During a new episode of the Bill and Giuliana Podcast on Wednesday, the television personality called out Jerry for “downplaying” their relationship:
“For a year and a half — except for the one breakup with Ginger Spice — we were together 24/7 every day, every night. You could listen to his interview and think maybe this was an easy relationship, he was dating a bunch of girls, but no. It was a real relationship.”
She recalled everything had been “perfect” and “totally fine” between them when the Jerry Maguire star went to film a movie with Geri Halliwell in London. But then photos emerged around a week or two later of the co-stars walking out of a restaurant together holding hands:
“It was, like the most shocking moment of my life so far. I walked into a voiceover booth, and I just fell to the ground, crying hysterically. It was awful. It was so upsetting, and it was so devastating.”
When Giuliana called and confronted Jerry, he said:
“Yeah, sorry. I don’t know what to tell you. I screwed up. Like, basically, have a nice life.”
Following the breakup, the reporter said she was then “left to pick up the pieces of what was literally a perfect relationship for a year.” It didn’t help matters either knowing she’d have to go onward watching his “hot and heavy” with Geri play out. However, she claims Jerry eventually came crawling back. She says he called Giuliana’s pal “crying” about how much he wants her back, and he even showed up at the lobby of her apartment building to beg for her forgiveness! Despite her telling him to leave, the daytime talk show host followed her into an elevator to declare his love for her:
“I am so sorry. I made the biggest mistake of my entire life. I don’t know what I was thinking. Please take me back. I love you. Blah Blah Blah. You’re the love of my life.”
Despite him cheating, Giuliana took him back! She and Jerry continued to date for another four or five months, but then things took a turn in their relationship again after they attended a Maxim Hot 100 Party in Las Vegas. When they returned to Los Angeles that same week, Jerry started to “act really weird,” and said he needed to return to Sin City for work. He left, and Giuliana couldn’t “get in touch with him” to find out when he would be back. She naturally became “worried” and texted him:
“Finally, I said, ‘Jerry, I’m gonna call the police,’ like I’m really worried about you. Where are you? He writes back, ‘Do not call the police.’ He goes, ‘I just got back to L.A. I’m at my condominium.’ He goes, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine.’ So I was like, oh my God, okay. So I write, I’m coming over, like, I haven’t seen you in like five days. What’s going on? So I go over there, and that’s where this whole thing happened.”
Giuliana clarified the conversation started over the intercom after he didn’t answer the doorbell and wouldn’t let her inside. Then, she said Jerry came out onto the balcony because “he didn’t want to see me in person.” And that’s when it happened. In a very “dismissive” and “cold as ice” way, he broke up with her:
“He didn’t have enough courage to come down and see me face-to-face, like a foot away, and instead did it from a balcony. He broke up with me from a balcony. And I honestly thought it was because he was just like over it, done, and he was just like, bye. It was devastating, heartbreaking, humiliating. It was traumatizing. It truly was, and I just could not believe what I was hearing.”
What she “did not know” at the time? That Jerry had another woman in the apartment! In fact, it didn’t cross her mind back then that would be the case! She only found out about that part when “he told his story” on Kelly Ripa‘s podcast! OMG! Giuliana continued:
“The whole thing was just crazy. Listen, at the end of the day, you know, here we are 22 years later and, obviously, we both moved on.”
Things ultimately worked out for both of them. The only reason Giuliana’s revisiting this is that she wanted to “un-fuzz” Jerry’s memory:
“I do love that Jerry is an open book, even if his memory is a little fuzzy. And the entire podcast that we’re doing today is coming from a nice place. It’s coming from a place of love. I truly believe everything happens for a reason. We are both happily married now, we both have great families, and we are both exactly where we’re meant to be.”
Unfortunately, Jerry didn’t appear on the podcast episode to hash things out with Giuliana despite her invitation. Maybe they’ll discuss their split together one day — and she’ll get the in-person apology she rightfully deserves for this awful situation! We know Jerry is a great man these days, so we’re sure if it’s meant to be it’ll happen!
