‘East of Eden’ explained, first trailer, plot details, Florence Pugh

Elia Kazan’s 1955 film version of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden turned an unknown actor named James Dean into a global celebrity whose fame transcended his early death. But that legacy also necessitated a change in creative direction for the newest adaptation of the 1952 novel, written by Kazan’s granddaughter, actress and filmmaker Zoe Kazan. Coming to Netflix in the fall, the updated East of Eden places Florence Pugh at the center of Steinbeck’s sprawling story, with Joseph Zada taking on the role that Dean made famous decades ago.

Appearing at the Netflix Upfront, the Oscar-nominated Little Women star said that shift in focus was one of the first things that she and Kazan discussed when they joined forces for the seven episode limited series. “Cathy is our engine in this version of the story,” noted Pugh, referring to Cathy Ames — the troubled mother of Cain and Abel-esque sons, Cal (Zada) and Aron (Joe Anders).

“The series is about how the choices we make reverberate across time,” Pugh continued. “This timeless story gets into the guts of what it means to be alive.” The actress then introduced the first teaser for the series, which spotlights its lush period production values and decades-spanning sweep that’s sure to make it a contender in the 2027 Emmys race.

Watch the trailer above and read on for everything you need to know about East of Eden.

What’s it about?

Written after such seminal novels as The Grapes of Wrath and Cannery Row, East of Eden represents Steinbeck’s last big swing of a book, and the author viewed it as his most ambitious tale as well. The story tracks the rising and falling fortunes of two families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons — from the Civil War to World War I. And those changing times profoundly change Cathy, transforming her into the manipulator that Jo Van Fleet played so well in the 1955 film. (The actress received a Best Supporting Actress nod for her role.)

Here’s the official logline from Netflix: “This modern interpretation of Steinbeck’s masterpiece will explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.”

Who else is involved?

Besides Pugh and the actors playing her onscreen sons, the cast includes Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, and Martha Plimpton. Jeb Stuart joins Kazan behind the camera as co-showrunner and executive producer. Garth Davis directs the first four episodes, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre helms the final three. Both directors also serve as executive producers alongside Antoine Douiahy, Zack Hayden, Steve Golin, David Levine, and Jill Arthur.

What are its awards prospects?

Considering the cast and Kazan’s family connection to the book, it’s safe to say that East of Eden will be top of Netflix’s mind when the 2027 TV awards cycle begins with the Golden Globes and SAG Actor Awards. Even sight unseen, Pugh has to be viewed as an early contender for a Best Movie/Limited Actress nomination, which would be her first Primetime Emmy nod.

When can I see it?

East of Eden will premiere on Netflix in the fall with an exact date still to be announced.
