2026 NBCUniversal upfronts, Emmy analysis, ‘Fast & Furious’ TV shows

How does the Peacock network plan to celebrate its 100th birthday? With a few laughs, a couple tears, a lot of crime, and plenty of (Vin) diesel fuel.

NBCUniversal unveiled its 2026-27 slate on Monday in front of a packed house at Manhattan’s famed Radio City Music Hall. The media conglomerate’s upcoming offerings span multiple platforms — including linear networks (NBC), cable channels (Bravo and USA), and streaming services (Peacock) — as well as a variety of genres. And NBCU will cap 2026 off with a live event celebrating its centenary that’s packed with reunions, montages, and celebrations of all the culture that’s popped since 1927.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS

By the numbers, NBC teased four new scripted series — up from one, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, last year — while Peacock is launching five fresh shows, all of which hope to be in the mix for the 2027 Emmys. Both outlets could use some wins in that regard; NBC and Peacock earned a combined 16 statuettes across the Primetime Emmys and Creative Arts Emmys during the 2025 awards cycle, well ahead of other broadcasters with streaming arms but well behind the powerhouse trio of HBO, Netflix, and Apple TV. And NBCU’s big hopes for the 2026 Emmys are the aforementioned Reggie Dinkins as well as All Her Fault, the twisty crime drama starring Sarah Snook.

But the real action will be coming at the 2029 Emmys; that’s when Vin Diesel is bringing the Fast & Furious franchise to Peacock with not just one, but four series, which will roll out after the eleventh and final installment in the film franchise in March 2028. “We’re very precious about these movies,” the actor told the audience. “But for the last decade, we have realized that the fans have wanted more. They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories.

“I had to wait until it was right,” Diesel continued, crediting NBCU Chief Content Officer Donna Langley with helping him speed up his decision. “That’s when I knew the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes this all feel like family would be protected in the TV space.” Diesel was mum about which specific franchise characters would populate those four series, but we’re guessing Luke Hobbs and Riley Hicks won’t be among them.

Here’s Gold Derby’s recap of what’s on the way from Peacock and NBC — and how it could impact the 2027 Emmys.

Peacock loves BookTok

In case you’re wondering why three out of Peacock’s five new series are adaptations of BookTok-favored bestsellers, it’s all the fault of All Her Fault. That twisty thriller scored strong numbers when it premiered last fall, and the prestige cast led by Succession‘s Sarah Snook and Dakota Fanning has kept it towards the top of Gold Derby’s Limited Series leaderboards for 2026 Emmy honors. Small wonder that Peacock is moving ahead with a trio of shows that embrace a similar model of marrying a bestselling book to a star-powered ensemble.

First up is The Five Star Weekend, which premieres on July 16, the ideal date for this Nantucket-set tale based on the 2023 beach read by Elin Hilderbrand. Jennifer Garner plays a recent widow and food influencer who invites four friends from different stages of her life — D’Arcy Carden, Gemma Chan, Regina Hall, and Chloë Sevigny — to help her mourn and move on… potentially with a former flame played by Timothy Olyphant. Introducing the trailer, Garner described the series as an “addictive drama” that’s about “friendship, grief, and finding yourself.” The teaser itself plays like The Madison crossed with The Big Chill, and while we’re still waiting to see how the former fares in this current Emmy cycle, the latter put three nominations up on the Oscar scoreboard back in 1984.

Debuting this fall, The Good Daughter is more clearly made in the image of All Her Fault. Adapted from Karin Slaughter’s 2017 crime yarn, the limited series pairs Oscar nominee Rose Byrne with Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy as estranged siblings who reconnect after their dad (Brendan Gleeson) gets caught up in a small town crime that’s reminiscent of a terrifying home invasion that tore their family apart two decades prior. “At its core, it’s a story about love, family, and resilience,” Byrne said, clearly seeking to set The Good Daughter‘s awards narrative early.

But BookTok isn’t just for drama — it’s also the source of Peacock’s newest comedy Dig, which re-teams Amy Poehler with her Parks and Recreation collaborator Mike Schur. Adapted from a 2023 novel by Kate Myers, the series casts Poehler as an archeologist on assignment in Greece who digs up a fresh find that sets off a chain reaction of crazy events. Hugh Laurie and Geraldine Viswanathan are among the ensemble around Poehler, who notably hasn’t headlined a live action scripted TV series since Parks and Rec. The actress received six Best Comedy Actress Emmy nods but zero wins during that show’s run; maybe this will be her ticket back to the awards circuit beyond her Golden Globe-winning podcast.

Peacock’s last two original offerings aren’t based on books, but should be familiar to moviegoers. Ted: The Animated Series is a cartoon sequel to Seth MacFarlane’s two Ted movies that features Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried reprising their roles from Ted 2 and adding a baby to the mix. And Crystal Lake is the long-awaited Friday the 13th prequel that picks up one year after the death of future hockey mask-wearing serial killer Jason Voorhees, and features Linda Cardellini as his grieving mother who embarks on a revenge-driven murder spree against the camp counselors that let him drown.

The first Crystal Lake trailer doesn’t try to hide the fact that Cardellini is the show’s big bad, instead leaning into her descent into madness and the bloodbath that ensues. While you might scoff at the idea of a Friday the 13th-derived TV series being in the Emmy conversation, don’t forget that Vera Farmiga scored a Best Drama Actress nod for the freshman year of the Psycho-based Bates Motel. And Cardellini already has two acting nods to her name — a Guest Drama Actress nomination for Mad Men and a Best Comedy Actress nod for Dead to Me — with a third in the cards for her acclaimed role in DTF: St. Louis. If anyone can improve Friday the 13th‘s awards luck, it’s her.

Primetime is crime time

David Boreanaz in ‘The Rockford Files‘Mark Hill/NBC

As the home of Dick Wolf’s never-ending Law & Order and Chicago franchises, NBC knows the ratings value of a good procedural. That’s why the network is bringing back one of the most recognizable entries in that canon — The Rockford Files, the six-season detective series that awarded the late James Garner one of his signature roles, along with five nominations and one win for Best Drama Actor. In the 2026 update, David Boreanaz steps into James Rockford’s (gum) shoes, sticking to the character’s origin story as a rough-and-tumble P.I. whose approach to crime-solving landed him in jail. While the first trailer plays like a standard network crime drama, The Rockford Files‘s Emmy legacy might encourage voters to take a closer look when it debuts in the fall.

Speaking of private investigators, Jake Johnson and Keith David are on the case for Sunset PI, a shaggy detective comedy also starring Jane Levy as the super-smart female private eye who spars with Johnson’s super-sarcastic wiseacre. While Johnson still has plenty of New Girl goodwill, cop comedies haven’t been major Emmy players since the glory days of Barney Miller and its 32 nominations, although Brooklyn Nine-Nine managed 11 career nods across its run. NBC’s other crime-centric offering, the drama Line of Fire, also seems like a dicey awards proposition despite a cast that includes Peter Krause and Hope Davis as the parents of an extended family who all serve in some branch of law enforcement.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Tea Leoni in ‘Newlyweds‘Nicole Weingart/NBC

Ready to travel back to the early ’90s? Jamie Lee Curtis sure is. From 1989 to 1992, the future Oscar winner starred opposite the late Richard Lewis on the ABC comedy Anything but Love. Apparently, Curtis was feeling nostalgic for those multicam days, because she’s putting aside her busy movie career to join fellow ’90s veterans Tea Leoni and Tim Daly on the decidedly old-school sitcom Newlyweds. The latter duo play middle aged lovers who race to the altar after a whirlwind fling only to realize they may be an odd couple in more ways than one. Curtis plays Daly’s ex-wife whose running gag in the trailer is that she mistakes Leoni for the maid instead of her former husband’s new bride.

In case you’re curious in exactly how long it’s been since a multicam sitcom was nominated for Best Comedy Series, you’ve got to go all the way back to The Big Bang Theory‘s seventh season in 2014. And while the first teaser for Newlyweds didn’t necessarily suggest that streak will be broken in 2027, Curtis could very well add another Emmy nod to her three prior nominations and one win. Between the upcoming second season of Scarpetta, the fifth and final season of The Bear, and now Newlyweds, Curtis really will be in everything, everywhere all at once during the rest of 2026.

But perhaps NBC’s best 2027 Emmy bet is the live variety special it has planned for Dec. 10. Clearly modeled after the SNL 50 anniversary special — which earned 12 nominations and 8 statuettes at the 2025 Emmys — the telecast is sure to be catnip for nostalgic voters as well as viewers. And to drive home the Saturday Night Live connection, Tina Fey was on hand to tease the yet-to-be named centennial event, promising: “The special will feature music, comedy, and surprise cast reunions.” We can’t wait for that Caroline in the City get-together.
