Box office: Practical Magic 2 takes No. 1 as Spider-Man chases record

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are about to put a spell on the box office as Spider-Man’s six-week reign at No. 1 comes to an end.

Practical Magic 2 should open at No. 1 with around $36 million from roughly 4,000 theaters. Bullock and Kidman are back as the Owens sisters 28 years after the original, with Susanne Bier directing and Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing reprising their roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, the eccentric pair who raised them. Joey King and Maisie Williams join as the next generation.

Warner Bros. is hoping these witches can brew up a hit. The studio had a monster 2025 with A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and One Battle After Another, which went on to win Best Picture, but it hasn’t put a single movie over $100 million domestic this year — its first drought this bad since 2001. Critics aren’t helping, with the Practical Magic sequel at 36 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, though the 1998 original landed at 30 percent and became a cult classic anyway.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day falls to second with $10 million to $11 million in its seventh weekend. Destin Daniel Cretton’s sequel sits at $924 million domestic and should pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.66 million) on Sunday to become the highest-grossing movie in domestic box office history, ending a reign of more than 10 years.

The Odyssey takes third with roughly $9 million in its ninth weekend. Christopher Nolan’s epic dropped only 9 percent last frame, its best hold yet, and at $590 million it could cross the $600 million mark this weekend. Imax is still doing the heavy lifting — the format accounted for 45 percent of the film’s Labor Day gross.

Coyote vs. Acme should hold fourth with about $6 million. The Looney Tunes movie Warner Bros. shelved is at $39.9 million domestic and fell just 25 percent last weekend.

The Uprising looks like the strongest in a crowded fight for fifth with around $4 million. Paul Greengrass wrote and directed the Focus Features epic, with Andrew Garfield leading a peasant revolt against King Richard II in 1381.

Also competing for the fifth slot are Angel Studios’ Runner, with Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, and Neon’s Hope, which opened Wednesday after taking in $36 million overseas. Disney’s Oasis documentary Don’t Look Back in Anger also opens in the low single digits.

Here are Gold Derby’s predicted box-office rankings for the top five over the Sept. 11-13 weekend:

  1. Practical Magic 2 — $36 million
  2. Spider-Man: Brand New Day — $11 million
  3. The Odyssey — $9 million
  4. Coyote vs. Acme — $6 million
  5. The Uprising — $4 million

Check back Sunday for actuals and how they stacked up against our predictions.
