Aubrey Plaza, Paul Rudd, Quentin Tarantino & More Highlight Tribeca Festival’s 25th Slate
A record 102 world premiere feature films are on tap at the 25th edition of the Tribeca Festival in June. While celebrity-driven films have long been a staple of Tribeca (along with Oscar-destined documentaries and work by top-tier narrative filmmakers), this year’s bounty includes a number of recognizable names. Among them are Paul Rudd, Quentin Tarantino (in front of the camera), Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Alicia Vikander, Emilia Clarke and Allison Brie. The festival will run from June 3 to 14. Its slate will feature 117 feature films as well as 86 shorts. The fest dropped the word “film” from its official name…
Bob Riha Jr/Getty Images “All in the Family.” “Sanford and Son.” “Maude.” “Good Times.” “The Jeffersons.” All of these were shows that were executive-produced by Norman Lear. All of them were huge hits. And then came “Hot L Baltimore,” a series which not only wasn’t a hit but which was considered so scandalous that its premiere didn’t even air in Baltimore. Although produced by Lear, “Hot L Baltimore” was based on Lanford Wilson’s 1973 play “The Hot L Baltimore,” which centered on the residents of the decrepit Hotel Baltimore. Indeed,…
The Roots of Madness. The title of the new documentary from Swiss filmmaker Edgar Hagen (Who Are We?, Journey to the Safest Place on Earth) is provocative. Its goal is ambitious. After all, amid the heated political debate about migration and rise of xenophobia across Europe and other parts of the world over the past decade-plus, the film looks to answer the question: Why do so many people become refugees? For his cinematic exploration, Hagen tries to understand “the long-term consequences of Western intervention in the Middle East,” as a synopsis highlights. In his investigation, the filmmaker accompanies veteran German journalist Ulrich…
Britney Spears is leaning on the people who matter most right now, and that support is apparently making all the difference during a deeply difficult chapter in her life. Following her recent DUI arrest and entry into rehab, insiders now say the pop icon has been finding strength in reconnecting with her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. And while Britney’s journey has had its fair share of ups and downs over the past few years, this renewed bond with her boys appears to be grounding her in a way she truly needs right now. Magic was in full force at the Warner Bros. CinemaCon panel on Tuesday, where Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman took the stage to introduce their upcoming sequel, Practical Magic 2. The appearance leaned heavily into nostalgia for the beloved 1998 fantasy, with the two stars dropping hints about what the witches will be cooking up this time around. In a lighthearted exchange, Bullock turned to Kidman and asked, “Why do we come here, Nicole?” to which Kidman replied “We come to this place for magic.” Kidman also offered a glimpse of what fans can expect from the sequel, promising that…
After rocking The Game Awards with the first official teaser, Legendary Pictures and Capcom made it clear that the latest adaptation of Street Fighter would be suitably unhinged. The footage served as a preview of the over-the-top action director Kitao Sakurai had in store for the fighting game movie to match the mix of ferocity and wackiness that exists within the iconic franchise. It was also a chance to show off a game-accurate cast of 17 fighters, from Ryu and his rival and friend Ken Masters, played by Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo, to the raging demon Akuma, embodied by…
‘Scrubs’ Showrunner Breaks Down the Big Dr. Cox Season 1 Finale Twist: “He Probably Never Thought This Is The Way That It Would Happen”
We should have known the Scrubs revival would leave us emotionally damaged. McGinley) in the season’s penultimate episode, the Season 1 finale confirmed that Dr. Cox is going to be in and out of the hospital for a while and under the care of J.D. (Zach Braff), who is deeply worried about his…
Amazon MGM Studios showed Las Vegas How to Rob a Bank on Wednesday, highlighting the action comedy heist during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation. The high-octane footage introduced a pack of criminals who post all of their jobs on YouTube, having robbed 15 banks and built a following of 31 million on their channel. They are far from subtle about it, declaring, “make your outfits memorable, just have fun with it” as they don elaborate animal masks. Nicholas Hoult serves as the group’s leader (in a wolf mask), with the rest of the group comprised of Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson and Rhenzy…
