The Thursday Murder Club, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, Happy Gilmore 2, The Old Guard 2, and The Best You Can are out at the Emmys. Or, more accurately, they were never in.
Netflix is not entering the five telefilms for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has confirmed exclusively. That significantly reduces the number of submissions for this year’s recently renamed Best Movie category.
Except for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which just debuted on March 20, the above titles have all received TV awards recognition this year: The Thursday Murder Club at the American Cinema Editors Awards, Happy Gilmore 2 at the Directors Guild of America Awards, The Old Guard 2 at the GLAAD Media Awards, and The Best You Can at the Writers Guild of America Awards. But as of now, they won’t be adding any Emmy nominations to their tallies.
Also, because you’re probably wondering, these five films can’t be entered for Oscar consideration because they weren’t released in theaters for seven consecutive days, per the Academy rulebook.

Netflix isn’t ditching the Best Movie category entirely. The streamer is still staging an Emmy campaign for these four original titles:
- Remarkably Bright Creatures, about an elderly widow (Sally Field) who forms an unlikely bond with a giant Pacific octopus while pulling night-shift duty at a local aquarium with a maintenance worker (Lewis Pullman);
- People We Meet on Vacation, a romantic comedy about polar opposites (Emily Bader and Tom Blyth) who end up exploring the world together;
- Straw, Tyler Perry’s psychological crime drama starring Taraji P. Henson as a single mother who’s pushed to her limits by financial hardship; and
- Ruth & Boaz, a faith-based film starring Serayah and Tyler Lepley that serves as a modern-day retelling of the Biblical Book of Ruth.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds for Best Movie have experienced a complete overhaul following the news that The Thursday Murder Club and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man — our two front-runners — would not be submitted on the Emmy ballot.
Now, the No. 1 spot is held by Swiped, the biopic starring Lily James as Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of the dating app Bumble. British action comedy Deep Cover has ascended into the runner-up position, while Remarkably Bright Creatures currently places third.

The days of original TV films influencing the zeitgeist and then going on to dominate the Emmys are in the rearview. Recent champions like Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square (2021) and Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) mostly made awards watchers scratch their heads. That’s why the Television Academy recently announced it was rebranding the category to “more accurately reflect the evolving landscape of cinematic content created for broadcast or streaming.”
The 2026 Emmys nominations in all categories, including Best Movie, will be announced on July 8.
