Roku Agrees to Better Protect Your Children’s Data As They Watch TV on Roku Players & Roku TVs

Roku Inc. has reached a settlement with Florida authorities to resolve a consumer protection lawsuit centered on the handling of children’s personal data. The agreement, announced on June 26, 2026, requires the streaming platform operator to commit substantial resources toward strengthening safeguards for younger users without facing financial penalties or any legal admission of liability, Bloomberg Law reported.

The case originated from a complaint filed in October 2025 by the Florida Attorney General’s Office in Collier County Circuit Court. Prosecutors alleged that Roku and its operations had gathered sensitive information from minors accessing content through the company’s apps on various devices, including smart televisions, smartphones, and tablets. This data reportedly encompassed viewing habits, geolocation details, and voice recordings collected via interactive features. Officials claimed these practices ran afoul of the state’s Digital Bill of Rights and broader prohibitions against deceptive or unfair business conduct, particularly in how information was shared with third parties for advertising and other purposes.

Under the terms of the resolution, Roku will allocate an estimated $25 million to develop and deploy advanced child protection tools across its ecosystem. These enhancements aim to provide families with expanded options to manage and restrict what younger viewers can access and how their information is processed. The company has indicated plans to roll out these updates efficiently to align with the agreement’s expectations for improved privacy standards. Florida officials described the outcome as a step forward in creating tangible protections that prioritize the security of minors in the digital environment.

The settlement marks a notable development in ongoing efforts to regulate data practices in the streaming industry. Roku, known for its widely used devices and platform that delivers services from major providers such as Netflix, Disney+, and others, serves millions of households nationwide. Many families rely on these systems for entertainment, making the privacy implications especially significant for parents concerned about online tracking and data commercialization. The lawsuit highlighted how features designed for convenience, such as voice search and personalized recommendations, could inadvertently expose children’s information if not properly controlled.

This resolution arrives amid broader national conversations about technology companies and their responsibilities toward vulnerable users. States across the country have increasingly pursued legislation and enforcement actions to address gaps in federal privacy rules, particularly where minors are involved. Florida’s Digital Bill of Rights, enacted in recent years, stands as one of the more assertive state-level frameworks aimed at granting individuals greater authority over their digital footprints. The Roku matter represented an early test of that law’s application in the streaming sector, drawing attention from legal experts monitoring how platforms adapt to heightened scrutiny.

Roku’s path forward includes not only the financial investment in new features but also internal adjustments to data collection protocols. By avoiding civil fines and formal findings of violation, the company maintains operational continuity while addressing the state’s core concerns. Legal representation for Florida came from a Naples-based attorney, while Roku was supported by established firms with experience in technology and consumer matters. The case number, 11-2025-CA-002351, now reflects the negotiated end to litigation that could have extended for months or years.

Industry observers note that such settlements often set precedents for similar platforms. Competitors in the smart TV and streaming device space may accelerate their own privacy initiatives to preempt regulatory challenges. For Roku, the agreement coincides with other corporate developments, including its pending acquisition by Fox Corporation in a transaction valued at around $22 billion. Integrating stronger child safeguards could enhance the platform’s appeal to family-oriented consumers and regulators alike as the deal progresses.

Parents and advocacy groups have long pressed for clearer controls in digital media environments. Features like robust parental dashboards, default privacy settings for underage accounts, and limits on data sharing represent common demands. Roku’s commitment under the Florida deal aligns with these expectations, potentially influencing user trust and retention in a competitive market. The streaming giant’s user base spans diverse demographics, but families with children form a critical segment where privacy assurances carry substantial weight.

The outcome also underscores the evolving role of state attorneys general in technology oversight. Rather than prolonged court battles, negotiated resolutions allow for swift implementation of protective measures. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office pursued the action as part of a wider focus on digital consumer rights, signaling continued vigilance in this area. For Roku, proactive compliance not only closes the current matter but positions the company more favorably amid potential future inquiries from other jurisdictions.

In the broader landscape, this case illustrates tensions between innovation in personalized entertainment and the imperative to shield younger audiences from exploitative data practices. As connected devices proliferate in homes, balancing functionality with security remains a central challenge for manufacturers and service providers. Roku’s investment of resources demonstrates a practical response that could benefit users while satisfying enforcement priorities. Moving ahead, the company will likely monitor feedback from families and adjust its systems accordingly to ensure lasting effectiveness.
