Miami has been an iconic location in movies and TV shows for the better part of the last 50 years, and even video games like Grand Theft Auto have taken to using it as a location for multiple series entries. Later this year on November 19, Grand Theft Auto 6 will take place in Vice City, which is directly inspired by Miami — other notable franchise locations like Los Santos are inspired by LA, while Liberty City is inspired by New York. Will Smith’s Bad Boys franchise is another iconic film franchise that’s repeatedly used Miami for its primary location. Movies and TV shows set in Miami-Dade County almost help the viewer feel like they’re on vacation with the characters, but there’s one franchise that has arguably used the location more effectively than any of its counterparts.
The franchise in question is, of course, Miami Vice. Miami Vice first arrived on the scene in 1984 as a TV show starring Don Johnson as James Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs. The show ran for five seasons between 1984 and 1988, and it can even be streamed for free on Tubi. The Miami Vice franchise has come back into the spotlight all these years later thanks to the new reboot movie coming to theaters on May 19, 2028, but it’s not the first time the franchise has ventured to the big screen. Universal enlisted Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx to lead a film remake of Miami Vice back in 2006, but the film struggled at the box office under the weight of its $135 million budget, grossing only $163 million globally.

Is ‘Miami Vice’ Available To Watch on Streaming?
At the time of writing, the only way to watch the 2006 Miami Vice reboot film is with a Prime Video subscription. It has yet to crack the top 10 on the platform, but this could well be coming in the next week or two. Michael Mann, best known for his work on the 1995 cult classic crime thriller, Heat, directed the 2006 Miami Vice reboot. Universal’s new iteration of Miami Vice will be led by recent Oscar-winner Michael B. Jordan as Tubbs and Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett. Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski is directing the action feature.
