Days away from almost certainly tying Mariah Carey’s record for the most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with a single song, Ella Langley dominated the CMA Award nominations with nine — two more than her closest competition — and landing in all the top categories, including Entertainer of the Year.
It would seem that everything is aligns for Langley and her record-breaking hit, “Choosin’ Texas,” to make a similarly big splash when Grammy nominations are announced on Nov. 16, but it’s still unclear whether the success will translate outside of country categories.

On the day of the CMA Awards nomination announcement, Langley is sitting well within nomination range for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist (where she’s currently ranked No. 1), but in those first two General Field categories, she’s down between 2 and 3%.

Then there’s the awards history of other country songs that have performed similarly well on the Hot 100. In the last few weeks, Langley surpassed records held by “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey. Both received nominations in top categories, but ultimately fell short on the night of the show.

Country has had a notoriously tough time winning in the General Field. Only two tracks from the genre have ever won Record of the Year in the entire history of the Grammys, “Not Ready to Make Nice” by the Chicks and “Need You Now” by Lady A, both of which arguably had greater cultural impact than “Choosin’ Texas,” despite its performance on the charts.
Langley may eventually clean up at the CMA Awards, however, just like she did earlier this year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, and that would help continue to cast her as a winner in the eyes of Recording Academy voters.
The 60th Annual CMA Awards will be televised live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 18 on ABC and Disney+ and available to stream the following day on Hulu.
