Kevin Reddington, the attorney for Lindsay Clancy — the Massachusetts mother who stood trial for the murder of her three children (Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months) — is now asking President Donald Trump for a pardon.

On Friday, after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict, the judge declared mistrial. Rather than face a new trial, Reddington went on Good Morning America on Tuesday to make a public plea to Trump:
“I’d like to say that perhaps Donald Trump, who felt compelled to speak out about this case, may very well… Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady and the person she is, what she’s been through, and consider a pardon.”

For his part, POTUS has been keeping up with the trial, telling reporters on Friday:
“She did a horrible, horrible. thing, can’t be worse, but you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be mental institution or jail or something, but I guess they’re going to go through another trial. It’s too bad.”

But could he even pardon her if he wanted to? She hasn’t been accused of or convicted of a federal crime.
The internet has been divided on the case. You’ve got people on one side who believe Lindsay Clancy is not guilty by reason of insanity, who are urging society to better understand postpartum psychosis and the lack of meaningful resources mothers have at their disposal. Then you have the other side, who believe she’s completely guilty and was in total control of herself and her actions.
