There has been much talk in film circles that the great Mike Leigh‘s latest film, Tender Loving Care, might be his last. Health issues, general aging and other things can get in the way for all of us, but if this turns out to be his finale, at least in terms of feature films — he has made 22, and another 20 stage plays — it is nice to report that this warm film, which, combined with 2024’s Hard Knocks, returns the seven-time Oscar nominee to the honest stories of British family life he has done so well in his remarkable career.
This one, however, finds the director in a mood to confront the inevitable changes and march of time, its joys and sadness in the lives of ordinary people going about living it. Tender Loving Care had its world premiere Friday at the Telluride Film Festival.
Leigh famously makes films in a very different manner than most, pulling together his cast and then workshopping them with an outline of where the scenario might head, but with no script. He spends up to six months with them — shaping, exploring and developing the characters that later will become the core of the screenplay Leigh writes. He has put together a troupe of actors over the decades since his first film in the early ’70s, and a lot of them return again and again. And many have for Tender Loving Care, including frequent collaborators Marion Bailey and Paul Jesson, along with Bailey’s real-life daughter, Alice Bailey Johnson, who also appeared in two more recent Leigh productions. New to the process and Leigh’s world is current Widow’s Bay Emmy favorite Kate O’Flynn who, no surprise, fits right in.

After some of the harsher sides of family life displayed in Hard Knocks, the 83-year-old Leigh has gone for a smaller slice of life, a more leisurely, less plot-driven look at family. There are no twists and turns, no real melodrama, but simply a time well spent with recognizable characters we grow to care about and root for. You might know these people. You might be these people.
O’Flynn plays Amy, a social worker and daughter of aging Birdie (Marion Bailey) and Geoff (Jesson), who are retired former Council members spending their days in their first-level flat, welcoming the visits of Amy, happy to inquire about her happiness and boyfriend and maybe how its going since she isn’t getting any younger and no grandchildren seem to be on the horizon. What Amy is keeping from them is the fact that she recently broke up with her married BF, who has gone back to his wife and child. She now is living again with former roommate and best friend and fellow social worker Rosie (Johnson), who talks vividly about her on-again/off-again love life, this time with a fireman she fancies but still hasn’t slept with. They are delighted to be living together again, having some fun and even visiting Birdie and Geoff since Rosie hasn’t seen them in a year and is happy to spend time with them.
The film also focuses on the the social work they both do. At the start of the movie, Rosie, who focuses on working with the elderly, is helping a recovering heart attack patient in the hospital until he goes AWOL. Another visit to a woman who is a hoarder and afraid to open her front door doesn’t go so well, but it is all part of the job. Amy has a number of people she sees including foster care kids. It is work they do well, and these scenes balance the personal love lives of both, which are not exactly successful considering they are both knocking on 40.
Dealing with the things of life, professionally and personally, can be tough, especially as Geoff is visibly slowing down as the film progresses and Birdie begins to fear his deteriorating condition might mean she is losing him. Again, the things of life, the ups and downs, the laughs and the tears — this is Mike Leigh at his most humane and heartwarming in a film that seems to be about nothing really, but the universal truth of it all is about everything.
Jesson and especially the wonderful Marion Bailey are unforgettable in kindhearted roles that are not showy at all, and that is what makes us want to spend time with this delightful couple in their sunset years. Alice Bailey Johnson is a real live wire, a perfect complement to O’Flynn’s more dour Amy. Both are terrific. These are good people, all of them, and we hope for the best. Leigh has a knack for finding exactly what works in a simple scenario like this and letting us spend a couple of hours with people going about their seemingly normal average lives with amazing grace and hope.
