2027 will get off to a fun start with Netflix’s brand-new Japanese romantic drama, From NEET to Peak. The series stars Sanctuary’s Wataru Ichinose as Kanta Kakuhata, an eight-year shut-in who, in honor of his dying mother, attempts to win the heart of Japan’s most beloved idol. From NEET to Peak is an upcoming Japanese Netflix Original drama directed by Yu Irie and written by Shigeki Kanek. The series is produced by Naoto Fujimura, Yuki Shibata, Hidehisa Chiwata, and executive producer Yuta Fukui of Netflix. Nippon TV and Django Film are the production studios behind the series.
When is From NEET to Peak released on Netflix?
Netflix has announced that From NEET to Peak will be released globally in January 2027.
An exact release date has yet to be revealed, but we expect to learn more soon.
What is the plot of From NEET to Peak?
Netflix has released a detailed synopsis for the series:
“Kanta Kakuhata (Ichinose) has spent eight years as a shut-in, living at home under his mother’s care, with zero romantic experience. When she falls ill and receives a terminal diagnosis, Kanta, flooded with regret over all the trouble he’s caused her, comes face to face with his mother for the first time. Gazing outside the window at a billboard featuring Mami Hamamiya (Hirose), Japan’s top idol, his mother tells him she once dreamed he would marry someone just as beautiful.
Kanta responds with a declaration as sudden as it is absurd: he’s going to marry that woman — and until he does, his mother is absolutely not allowed to die. Thus begins an utterly impossible challenge: a socially inexperienced shut-in setting his sights on the most unattainable woman in Japan.
First, Kanta has to leave the house. Then, talk to people. And finally, find a way to get close to Mami. As he tackles one “mission in life and love” after another, he meets an array of eccentric characters and steadily levels up from zero experience. What begins as a promise to his mother gradually becomes a grand adventure that transforms his own life. Will he ever reach Mami, as lofty and out of reach as Mount Fuji itself?”
Who are the cast members of From NEET to Peak?
Wataru Ichinose and Suzu Hirose are the only confirmed cast members so far.
Wataru Ichinose plays Kanta Kakuhata. The actor previously starred in Netflix’s Last Samurai Standing, Sanctuary, and Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning. The actor’s only other lead roles in a series were in Shinkaishaku Sangokushi Ibun and Plant Maniacs Club. He has also starred in films such as Kingdom, the High&Low franchise, Cells at Work, and Gunkan Shonen.

Suzu Hirose plays Mami Hamamiya. The actress recently starred in Netflix’s smash-hit remake of Human Vapor and previously starred in Asura. She also starred in the dramas Who Saw the Peacock Dance in the Jungle and Chihayafuru Full Circle, both of which are available on Netflix. Hirose has played lead roles in other dramas, including Rojo no Ruka, Hold My Hand at Twilight, Nemesis, and Natsuzora.
