YouTube Has Overtaken Cable TV as Americans’ Dominant Daily Video Habit

A new consumer research report released this week shows that YouTube has moved past live television like cable TV in both reach and overall cultural weight among U.S. adults, marking one of the clearest signs yet of how viewing habits have shifted away from scheduled cable and broadcast programming.

According to Attest’s 2026 Attention Economy Report, which surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults and incorporated five years of tracking data, 90 percent of Americans access YouTube on a typical weekday, per a report by TV Technology. That figure exceeds the 79 percent who use streaming services and the 73 percent who watch live TV. While average daily time spent on subscription streaming platforms still edges YouTube slightly—one hour and 49 minutes versus one hour and 46 minutes—live television trails both at one hour and 31 minutes.

The larger picture is even more striking when creator-driven video is grouped together. Americans now spend an average of three hours and 54 minutes per day with YouTube, TikTok and other social video platforms. That total surpasses the three hours and 20 minutes spent combined on live TV and major streaming services. Researchers concluded that YouTube is no longer merely an alternative to television; it has already pulled ahead in several key measures. Notably, 23 percent of Americans now say they primarily watch YouTube on their television sets rather than on phones or computers.

Demographic patterns reveal how uneven the change has been. Generation Z averages two hours and 25 minutes of YouTube viewing per day, well above Millennials at one hour and 55 minutes, Generation X at one hour and 18 minutes, and Baby Boomers at 53 minutes. Men also watch substantially more YouTube than women, averaging two hours and nine minutes compared with one hour and 23 minutes.

The findings challenge the common assumption that audiences only want ever-shorter clips. Two-thirds of people regularly watch YouTube videos longer than 15 minutes. Similar long-form viewing occurs on other platforms that originally launched with strict time limits and later expanded them. The data suggests platforms have been following consumer demand for longer content rather than simply fragmenting attention into bite-sized pieces.

Attention itself has also changed. Only 12 percent of people give television their undivided focus. The remaining 88 percent engage in other activities at the same time, and 68 percent specifically second-screen by scrolling social media, shopping, messaging or gaming while a program plays.

Advertising tolerance has remained relatively consistent across generations. Viewers generally consider ads excessive once they appear every 14 minutes on streamed television and every 12 minutes on social video. What differs is behavior. Younger audiences skip ads far more frequently. When ads cannot be skipped, fewer than half of viewers continue watching as intended; many redirect their attention, mute the sound or stop watching.

These shifts build on earlier industry milestones. In 2025 Nielsen reported that streaming as a category first surpassed the combined share of broadcast and cable television in a full month, with YouTube accounting for the single largest slice of that streaming time. The latest Attest data indicates the trend has continued into 2026, with creator platforms now commanding more total daily minutes than traditional television plus subscription streaming combined.

The implications extend beyond entertainment. Advertisers, programmers and device makers face an audience that treats the television set as one screen among many and treats YouTube as a primary destination rather than a secondary one. Live sports and appointment viewing still draw large linear audiences, yet everyday viewing has migrated toward on-demand, algorithm-driven, creator-produced video that people can start, stop and revisit on their own schedule.
