Paramount+ is Now Free on The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel has expanded its free ad-supported offerings by making select content from Paramount+ available at no cost, giving viewers an easy way to sample popular series before committing to a full subscription. Among the titles now accessible without payment are the opening episodes of high-profile shows such as Lioness, the intense action thriller created by Taylor Sheridan. Viewers can stream the first three episodes of such series free of charge on The Roku Channel, providing a low-risk opportunity to evaluate the storytelling, characters, and overall quality before deciding whether to continue watching. Once hooked, audiences can subscribe directly to Paramount+ through The Roku Channel itself, keeping the entire experience within a single familiar interface rather than navigating multiple apps or websites. This is also very similar to what Paramount+ has started to offer inside its Android app.

This arrangement reflects a growing trend in the streaming industry where free ad-supported television platforms partner with premium services to offer limited previews. By unlocking the initial episodes of series like Lioness, The Roku Channel lowers the barrier for new viewers who might otherwise hesitate to pay for a subscription without sampling the material first. Lioness, which follows elite operatives engaged in high-stakes covert missions, has built a dedicated following through its blend of action, drama, and complex character dynamics. Access to those early episodes allows potential fans to experience the tone and pacing firsthand. After finishing the free portion, a seamless path exists to upgrade via a Paramount+ subscription managed entirely through The Roku Channel account, with options for both ad-supported and ad-free tiers.

The move benefits both platforms. The Roku Channel strengthens its position as a comprehensive entertainment hub by incorporating premium content samples alongside its extensive free library of movies, classic television, live channels, and original programming. Paramount+, in turn, gains exposure to the large installed base of Roku devices and The Roku Channel users, many of whom already rely on the platform for everyday viewing. Subscriptions handled through The Roku Channel appear on a single monthly bill and can be managed from the same account used for free content, simplifying the process for households that prefer consolidated services.

A brief look at the backgrounds of both services highlights how this collaboration fits into their broader development. Paramount+ traces its roots to CBS All Access, which launched in October 2014 as an over-the-top streaming option from CBS Corporation. The service initially focused on live local CBS stations and on-demand access to network programming. Following the 2019 merger of CBS and Viacom, the platform expanded its library significantly with content from Paramount Pictures, MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and other brands. In March 2021 it rebranded as Paramount+, positioning itself as a major player with original series, theatrical films, live sports including NFL games on CBS, and a wide catalog of television libraries. Over subsequent years, it continued adding international markets and exclusive titles, establishing itself as a destination for both prestige dramas and mass-appeal entertainment.

The Roku Channel debuted in September 2017 as a free, ad-supported streaming service available on Roku devices. Created by the company that pioneered consumer streaming players, it began with a selection of licensed movies and shows designed to give users immediate free content without requiring additional apps. The service quickly grew through partnerships with major studios and content aggregators, later expanding to web browsers, mobile devices, and international markets. It introduced dedicated sections for kids and family programming, acquired substantial original content libraries, and steadily added hundreds of free live linear channels covering news, sports, movies, and niche interests. By offering both free ad-supported material and premium subscription add-ons in one place, The Roku Channel evolved into a central destination within the Roku ecosystem.

Together, these histories illustrate complementary strengths. Paramount+ brings a deep well of exclusive and library content built over more than a decade of streaming innovation, while The Roku Channel provides broad accessibility and a user-friendly free entry point that has attracted tens of millions of viewers. The current offering of free early episodes from series such as Lioness demonstrates how the two services can work in tandem. Viewers who start with the complimentary episodes on The Roku Channel and then subscribe to Paramount+ through the same platform enjoy a continuous path from discovery to full access. This model encourages exploration without financial risk and rewards sustained interest with convenient, integrated subscription options. As streaming competition intensifies, such partnerships are likely to become more common, giving audiences greater flexibility in how they sample and ultimately pay for the entertainment they enjoy.
