The biggest award winner of this year’s Sundance Film Festival is getting ready to debut in theaters.
Josephine from writer-director Beth De Araújo won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award during Park City’s final Sundance, and from that moment appeared poised to be a film worth contending with once it found a general audience.
Now that time is approaching as Sumerian Pictures prepares to release the Channing Tatum-Gemma Channa feature in theaters this fall and the first teaser debuts.
Here’s everything you need to know about Josephine.
The Trailer
The Cast
Josephine find both Tatum and Chan taking supporting roles behind a very young lead in Mason Reeves. The young actress makes her feature debut in the drama and blew audiences away at Sundance.
The Story
The film tells the story of the titular 8-year-old (Reeves), who witnesses an assault — an event that wreaks havoc on her life and the lives of her parents (Chan and Tatum).
Behind the Scenes
Josephine is the second feature-length effort from writer-director Beth de Araújo. The project got the filmmaker in to the Sundance Institute’s Directors Lab back in 2018 and went on to win the top two prizes as the festival earlier this year.
The Awards Odds
Double Sundance winners have occurred before, and when they do, the films tend to have some staying power for award season later that year. The most recent double winner, CODA, went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2022.
The Release Date
Josephine will open in US theaters on Nov. 20.
