Disney+ has ordered a pilot of a new series based on the Spaceship Earth ride at EPCOT.
Here’s how Disney is describing the project: When a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes awry, a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself.
The pilot episode will be written by Jason Fuchs and Michael Waldron. The two will also executive produce, along with director Lee Toland Krieger, Adam Fishbach, and Adam Fasullo.
The Spaceship Earth ride has been active since the park opened in 1982. The ride allows visitors to travel through time and learn about the history of communication from the Stone Age to the computer age. Along the way, guests get a glimpse of major milestones in history, including the invention of the printing press, the end of the Civil War, and the moon landing, and how those events were communicated to the public.
If the series is picked up, it would join a list of titles based on Disney rides. That list also includes Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Jungle Cruise.
