Frndly TV, the affordable live TV streaming service now under Roku ownership, has begun expanding its content offerings by incorporating Roku Originals into its lineup. The latest addition is the romantic comedy Summer Sparks, which stars Jesse Metcalfe and Kathryn Davis and is now available for streaming on the platform. This move marks an early step in actively growing the presence of Roku-produced programming within the Frndly TV ecosystem.
Summer Sparks centers on a summer cooking camp at Camp Evergreen, where single father Adam arrives with his competitive son and encounters single mother Monica, who is returning to the camp of her childhood to share its experiences with her own children. The story follows their navigation of cooking challenges, family reconnections, and unexpected personal sparks amid the competition and camp activities. Directed by Marni Banack and written by Ansley Gordon and Thomas Ambrosini, the feature was produced by Champlain Media for Studio TF1 America under the Roku Originals banner. It originally premiered free on The Roku Channel on July 7, 2026, and now reaches Frndly TV subscribers as part of the broader integration effort.
This development comes more than a year after Roku completed its acquisition of Frndly TV. In May 2025, Roku announced a deal valued at $185 million in cash to purchase the Denver-based service, with a portion of the payment structured around performance milestones over the subsequent two years. The transaction closed in the second quarter of 2025, specifically around early May, bringing Frndly TV fully into the Roku fold while allowing it to remain available across a wide range of devices and platforms beyond Roku hardware, including Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android devices, Samsung and Vizio smart TVs, web browsers, and mobile apps.
The addition of original content like Summer Sparks builds on Frndly TV’s established identity as a curated, lower-cost alternative in the live TV streaming space. A brief look at its origins shows how the service was designed from the start to fill a specific gap. Frndly TV was founded in October 2019 by a team of former Dish Network executives consisting of Andy Karofsky, Bassil El-Khatib, Michael McKenna, and Mike McClain. Based in Denver, Colorado, the founders sought to create a streamlined option for feel-good, family-friendly programming at prices that avoided the complexity and expense of larger traditional cable or satellite packages and the growing bulk of many streaming bundles.
It launched that same month with an initial lineup of 12 live channels, among them Hallmark Channel, The Weather Channel, and Outdoor Channel, along with cloud DVR capabilities. Early recognition included a runner-up nod from TechHive as one of the best new services of 2019. Over the following years the channel count expanded steadily. Additions in 2020 and 2021 included Curiosity Channel, INSP, Dove Channel, BYUtv, Recipe.TV, Local Now, GetTV, and FETV. A significant deal with A&E Networks in late 2021 brought A&E, History, Lifetime, and related channels, prompting the service’s first modest price increase. Further growth in 2022 incorporated networks from Weigel Broadcasting such as MeTV, Heroes & Icons, Decades (later Catchy Comedy), Story Television, and Start TV, making Frndly TV an early carrier of the full group. By later years the total exceeded 50 channels, spanning classics, outdoor programming, lifestyle content, and popular entertainment networks, while keeping plans relatively affordable compared with broader live TV packages.
Subscriber interest grew accordingly, with reports indicating hundreds of thousands of users within the first few years and continued expansion of on-demand libraries and features such as unlimited cloud DVR on higher tiers and 72-hour lookback. The service maintained a focus on clean, positive programming aimed at households seeking value without sports-heavy or news-intensive lineups, appealing particularly to cord-cutters interested in Hallmark-style romances, classic series, and family viewing.
Under Roku ownership, the core model remains intact, with Frndly TV continuing to operate as a subscription service offering live channels, on-demand titles, and recording tools. The introduction of Roku Originals represents a strategic extension that leverages the parent company’s content production capabilities. Summer Sparks fits the existing catalog well, given its themes of family, connection, light romance, and feel-good storytelling that align with channels long featured on the service. Officials have indicated that more such titles are expected as the integration deepens, potentially increasing the volume of exclusive or newly available original programming for Frndly TV audiences.
For subscribers, this means additional viewing options without requiring separate access to The Roku Channel for certain titles. The film’s runtime of roughly 90 minutes and its emphasis on accessible, heartwarming narrative make it suitable for the platform’s demographic. As Roku continues to develop its portfolio of original features—building on earlier scripted efforts in romance and comedy genres—the Frndly TV pathway provides another distribution avenue that can help retain and attract users interested in both live linear channels and on-demand originals.
