Renewal Status: Making Netflix History
Virgin River was officially renewed for Season 8 well ahead of the Season 7 premiere back in July 2025.
The eighth season will consist of 10 new episodes. With this early renewal, Virgin River officially became Netflix’s longest-running scripted English-language live-action series, surpassing Grace and Frankie and Orange is the New Black.
The show remains a success for Netflix despite an obvious drop-off in viewership in recent seasons. The most recent seventh season spent four weeks in the top 10s, amassing 175.6 million viewing hours and 21.2 million completed views.
Netflix’s Engagement Reports also show how the series continues to pull in massive viewing hours globally, with all seasons now having pulled in over 2.07B viewing hours between 2023 and mid-2026, equating to over a quarter of a billion views.
Season 8 Production Schedule, Directors & Expected Release Date
While Season 7 officially hit Netflix on March 12, 2026, the cast and crew didn’t rest for long. Production for Season 8 kicked off on April 22, 2026, and is currently in its final days of shooting in beautiful British Columbia (including Squamish, Vancouver, and Burnaby).

Series star Martin Henderson returns behind the camera to helm the premiere, following his directorial debut in Season 6. Veteran Martin Wood expands his record as the most prolific director in Virgin River history to a whopping 23 episodes. Also joining the roster is Norman Buckley, a massive get for the series. Fans of Netflix romance will recognize Buckley from his extensive work directing and executive producing Sweet Magnolias.
The behind-the-scenes team shaping this season includes showrunner/executive producer Patrick Sean Smith, alongside EPs Richard Keith, Roma Roth, Thomas Ian Griffith, Erin Cardillo, Mary Page Keller, and Jackson Aaron Sinder.

The Virgin River Season 8 cast is undergoing one of its biggest reshuffles in years. Rotating supporting players is one of the easiest ways for a long-running ensemble drama to refresh storylines while managing the rising costs of cast contracts deep into a show’s run.
Who is Leaving Virgin River?
Several recurring characters are confirmed not to return for Season 8:

Who is New to the Cast?
Natasha Calis and Mitchell Slaggert
To fill the void, the series is bringing in fresh blood:
Natasha Calis as Dr. Astrid: Following the departure of Dr. Cameron, a new medical professional is arriving at Doc’s clinic. Calis (SkyMed) joins in a heavily recurring role as Dr. Astrid, a brashly confident surgical resident assigned to Doc’s clinic after mysteriously being placed on probation. Her bedside manner might be lacking, and she wants to get out of town ASAP. Astrid’s arrival appears closely connected to Doc’s controversial Season 7 decision to partner with Grace Valley Hospital. Interestingly, Calis holds an option to become a series regular if the show is renewed for Season 9.
Mitchell Slaggert as Eddie: Slaggert joins as a charismatic, laid-back EMT who arrives in town despite never envisioning himself in a small-town setting. Expect him to naturally intersect with Mel, Doc, Kaia, and the wider emergency response team (and likely end up at Jack’s bar sooner rather than later).
Who is Returning?
The core leads are all back, including Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Tim Matheson, Annette O’Toole, Kandyse McClure, Colin Lawrence, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, and Kai Bradbury.
Despite his character’s brutal cliffhanger crash, Benjamin Hollingsworth (Brady) is officially back and has been spotted on set during Season 8 production. Additionally, Austin Nichols returns as Dr. Eli Kelly in an expanded recurring capacity, and Cody Kearsley returns as Clay.
What to Expect from the Story in Season 8
Season 8 arrives with more unresolved threads than any previous season, but we already have some massive clues about where the story is heading.
The Time Jump & The Baby
Season 8 opens with a confirmed four-month time jump. Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith revealed the season will jump forward and reveal what happened with the baby’s surgery from there. By not picking up immediately post-crisis, the show drops us into the reality of Mel and Jack already living inside these new realities.
Casting calls for Season 8 asked for Asian/mixed babies (3-9 months), Caucasian babies (2-6 months), and newborns (15 days-3 months). This lines up perfectly with a four-month time jump. The baby survives, but Smith confirms Season 8 will focus heavily on the immense pressure parenting places on Mel and Jack’s marriage—especially when raising a child with serious medical needs.

Brady & Brie
“Things are not going to get easier for Brady anytime soon,” Hollingsworth warned. While Smith played coy with the press about Brady’s fate (“there could be survival, but there could be unsurvival”), Hollingsworth’s presence on the Season 8 set proves he made it. The question is what surviving looks like. The physical consequences of a crash at that speed could be severe. If Brady cannot walk for a significant stretch of Season 8, it will force Brie into the role of the steady caretaker, testing her newly found boundaries.
A Virgin River Halloween?
One of the more interesting details emerging from production is an apparent Halloween theme. Several behind-the-scenes social media posts (including one from Alexandra Breckenridge thanking the coffee cart team) featured Halloween imagery, and public filming locations have reportedly been spotted with seasonal autumn decorations. Given the four-month time jump, a cozy, fall-themed opening to Season 8 feels incredibly likely.
Doc, Hope, and Roland
Roland is no longer just a subplot. Smith confirmed Roland’s role will be “much more complicated in Season 8” and that his intention for Doc and Hope is to deepen their conflict so they can “grow back to each other.” Between the Grace Valley Hospital partnership fracture and the arrival of the prickly Dr. Astrid at the clinic, Doc and Hope’s relationship will be heavily tested.

Is Season 8 the Final Season?
With major cast departures and contracts for the leads originally rumored to be up after Season 8, many fans have worried that Virgin River might be coming to a close.
However, recent comments from Netflix suggest the town’s doors will remain open. When asked about the future of the streamer’s longest-running scripted hit, Netflix executive Jinny Howe told Deadline in July 2026:
“All I’m going to say is the fans of this show are going to continue to get what they want as long as they want, and we are being very thoughtful about how to make sure we are both serving but protecting the fandom.”
Combined with the news that new cast member Natasha Calis holds an option for Season 9, it sounds like we might be visiting Mel and Jack for years to come.
What happened to the prequel spin-off?
