Robert Downey Jr. is ready to bring doom to Marvel‘s Avengers.
Disney has released the trailer for directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo‘s Avengers: Doomsday, set to hit theaters Dec. 18 (watch, below). The movie includes an extensive list of Marvel superheroes facing off against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., who is known for his previous Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.
The trailer, which first debuted at CinemaCon in April, gives the first look at Downey’s Doctor Doom in his mask. “Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing except this: If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters,” Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor tells his fellow heroes in the footage about the threat of Doom. “Mark my words: We are going to need a miracle.”
A different moment in the footage shows Chris Evans surprising Hemsworth, who exclaims, “It’s not possible,” as Evans grabs Thor’s hammer.
Previously released teasers from the film have included looks at Black Panther (Letitia Wright), Captain America (Evans), Thor (Hemsworth) and the X-Men’s Cyclops (James Marsden). Downey’s return as Doom was not revealed in those teasers, although he appeared briefly in last year’s Fantastic Four: First Steps without his face being shown.
The Russos helm Avengers: Doomsday from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. The directing duo return to lead an MCU feature for the first time since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which became the second-highest-grossing movie of all time.
“He’s not simply a villain — he’s one of the most complex Marvel characters,” Joe Russo had teased from the CinemaCon stage. “He’s always three moves ahead.”
At the event, Downey told the crowd, “I couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team — let alone as a new character.”
