Another Major Streaming Service is Shutting Down Starting This Month

Paramount Global is preparing to discontinue its standalone BET+ streaming platform, with the phased shutdown beginning this month and expected to wrap up by the middle of August 2026. This shift toParamount+ was announced back in March of this year. The move marks a significant consolidation in the company’s streaming strategy, shifting focus toward its flagship Paramount+ service while integrating popular Black-focused programming into a broader ecosystem. Existing subscribers will receive options to transition smoothly, including discounted access to Paramount+.

The decision follows Paramount’s recent full acquisition of BET+ after buying out Tyler Perry Studios’ stake in the venture. This ownership change has allowed the company to streamline operations and eliminate redundant platforms. As part of the transition, current BET+ content, totaling more than 1,000 hours of originals, movies, and specials, is migrating to Paramount+. Some select original movies are also heading to the free ad-supported Pluto TV platform, expanding accessibility for viewers who prefer no-cost options with advertisements.

New subscribers can no longer sign up for BET+ directly, signaling the final stages of the service’s independent operation. Paramount is actively communicating with current users about the changes, offering promotional rates on Paramount+ subscriptions to ensure continuity of access to beloved shows and films. This includes popular series produced in partnership with Tyler Perry Studios, such as “Sistas,” “Zatima,” “All the Queen’s Men,” and others that have built strong audiences over the years. The integration aims to make these titles available to a larger global audience through Paramount+’s established infrastructure.

BET+ emerged as a dedicated streaming destination for Black audiences in a competitive media landscape. Launched on September 19, 2019, the service originated from a collaboration between BET Networks and Tyler Perry Studios. It was designed as a premium on-demand platform featuring a mix of original programming, licensed films, and classic BET content tailored to celebrate Black culture, storytelling, and entertainment. Priced affordably at launch, it quickly gained traction by offering series like “The Oval,” “First Wives Club,” and a robust library of movies that addressed themes often underrepresented in mainstream streaming.

The platform filled a notable gap by prioritizing authentic narratives from Black creators, producers, and performers. Tyler Perry’s involvement brought high-profile projects that resonated with subscribers seeking family dramas, comedies, and inspirational content. Over its roughly seven-year run, BET+ expanded its catalog to include hundreds of hours of exclusive material, building a loyal base of viewers who appreciated its focus on representation. It operated alongside the linear BET cable network, providing a digital extension that allowed cord-cutters to access premium Black entertainment without traditional cable bundles.

The service grew amid broader industry shifts toward streaming consolidation. As media companies faced rising costs and subscriber fatigue, Paramount pursued efficiency by merging its assets. The shutdown reflects larger trends where specialized platforms are absorbed into main services to reduce overhead and enhance content discovery. By folding BET+ into Paramount+, the company creates a unified “BET Hub” within the app, preserving the brand’s identity while leveraging Paramount+’s advanced technology and international reach.

As the August completion date approaches, the media landscape continues to adapt to economic realities and viewer habits. The end of BET+ as an independent service closes one chapter but opens opportunities for deeper integration and growth. Audiences invested in diverse content can look forward to seamless access through Paramount+, maintaining the cultural significance that BET+ championed since its inception. The transition underscores how streaming services evolve to sustain long-term viability while honoring their foundational missions.

Subscribers are encouraged to check their emails for personalized transition details and take advantage of the discounted Paramount+ offers to keep enjoying their favorite programming without interruption.
