DIRECTV Loses 52 ABC, CBS, FOX, & NBC Stations

E.W. Scripps Local Media removed 54 of its local broadcast television stations from DIRECTV’s satellite, streaming, and U-verse services on Sunday evening, May 31, 2026, after the two companies failed to reach a new retransmission consent agreement. Scripps warned of the blackout last week, but now it has become a reality. The blackout affects viewers in 36 Nielsen Designated Market Areas across the country and marks the latest high-profile dispute between a major station group and a pay-television provider.

The contract between Scripps and DIRECTV expired at the end of May without renewal. Scripps, which owns dozens of ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC affiliates, sought higher compensation for its programming than DIRECTV was willing to pay. Industry observers note that retransmission fees have risen steadily in recent years as broadcasters leverage local content, particularly news and sports, to secure increased payments from distributors.

The affected stations include 17 ABC affiliates and outlets carrying other major network programming. Markets impacted include Baltimore, Boise, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Lexington, Miami, Milwaukee, Nashville, Omaha, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Tampa-St. Petersburg, and West Palm Beach, among others. Viewers in these areas lost access to local newscasts, network prime-time shows, and live sports events carried by the stations.

The timing of the blackout has raised concerns among local communities. Several states and localities are preparing for primary elections in June, during which local stations typically provide extensive coverage of candidates, issues, and voting information. In addition, major sporting events are at risk of disruption for DIRECTV subscribers. Scripps stations carry ABC and NBC programming that includes upcoming NBA Finals games between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, as well as the NHL Stanley Cup Final featuring the hometown Golden Knights in Las Vegas against the Carolina Hurricanes. The U.S. Open golf tournament on NBC is also scheduled in the coming weeks.

This dispute follows a similar conflict earlier in the year when Scripps temporarily removed 40 stations from Comcast’s Xfinity service in 19 markets for more than a month starting April 1. Such carriage battles have become more frequent as media companies seek to offset declining linear television viewership with higher fees from distributors while pay-TV providers push back against rising costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers.

Scripps has emphasized the importance of fair compensation to support local journalism, sports rights, and community programming amid increasing production expenses. The company operates stations that deliver daily news, weather, traffic updates, and coverage of regional events that many residents rely upon. In recent days, several Scripps-owned stations notified viewers of the potential loss of service and encouraged them to contact DIRECTV to express their desire to maintain access.

DIRECTV, for its part, has described the demands from Scripps as the highest rates the company has ever been asked to pay for a station group. The provider maintains that many of the programs carried by the affected stations remain available for free over the air via antennas, as well as through network websites, station apps, and various streaming platforms. DIRECTV has directed customers to resources such as tvpromise.com for guidance on alternative ways to access local content during the outage.

The removal highlights broader tensions in the television industry. Broadcast stations, traditionally available at no direct cost to viewers with antennas, have increasingly relied on retransmission consent fees from cable, satellite, and streaming services as a key revenue source. These fees help fund expensive local operations and sports rights deals but contribute to higher bills for subscribers. Critics argue that such disputes inconvenience consumers and underscore the need for more competitive options in content distribution.

As negotiations continue, both sides have indicated a desire to restore service. DIRECTV has stated it remains committed to reaching a reasonable agreement that protects customers from unnecessary cost increases. Scripps has similarly expressed hope for a resolution that recognizes the value of its local programming. In the interim, viewers in affected markets are exploring workarounds, including over-the-air antennas, free ad-supported streaming services, and other providers.

The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for millions of households. Industry analysts expect similar retransmission disputes to arise in the coming months as more contracts expire amid ongoing shifts in how Americans consume television. Customers seeking updates are advised to check local station websites or contact their service providers directly.

This development underscores the complex economics of local broadcasting in an era of fragmented viewing habits, where the balance between compensation for content creators and affordable access for audiences continues to evolve.
