MasterChef Season 16 Episode 7 recap: Team Pitch to Plate

MasterChef: Global Gauntlet is kicking off its first team challenge — and it’s a big one.

In this week’s “Team Pitch to Plate” episode, Gordon Ramsay, Tiffany Derry, and Joe Bastianich trade their tasting spoons for referee whistles as the FIFA World Cup 2026 comes to the MasterChef kitchen. The home cooks team up with the U.S. Soccer Federation to serve lunch to 101 hungry young soccer players coming straight off the field.

With the four global territories — Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Americas — still battling for dominance, teamwork will matter just as much as technique. One team will walk away with the win — and immunity. The others? At least one home cook will be sent packing.

Team Challenge

The home cooks arrive at an indoor soccer facility to find youth players already on the pitch — running drills with none other than Mauricio Pochettino, Head Coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. Gordon, never one to sit on the sidelines, laces up his cleats and steps into goal as the kids take free kicks directly at him. Spoiler: the kids are not intimidated.

When the judges finally pull everyone into the kitchen, Coach Pochettino offers the home cooks the same advice he gives his players: “Communication is key. And of course, the standards. The standard is so important. Focus in on what you need to do to make your team better.”

As last week’s immunity winner, Heidi has the power to pick the teams. After a quick huddle with her Team Africa teammates, she makes her call: Africa partners with the Americas, combining their four players each into a tight squad of eight. That leaves Team Asia-Pacific and Team Europe to join forces — giving them a two-cook advantage on paper. Whether that’s a blessing or a recipe for chaos remains to be seen.

The Teams

The four territories are now two: Red Team pairs Africa with the Americas, while Blue Team unites Asia-Pacific and Europe. And it wouldn’t be a team challenge without a captain. Dave steps up to lead the Red Team, and Ted takes the helm for the Blue Team — with a big incentive on the line. Whichever captain leads their team to victory earns the immunity pin, plus a major advantage heading into the next challenge.

The judges’ brief: one protein and two sides per plate. Simple enough — until you’re plating 101 of them.

In the kitchen

As the teams get to work, the judges watch from the sidelines — and the critiques start before a single plate hits the pass.

Gordon isn’t sold on Heidi’s team-picking strategy. With two fewer cooks than the Blue Team, he questions whether the Red Team can keep up — and he’s not convinced their captain Dave is ready to rally the troops. “Captains can’t sit there in silence,” he warns.

Joe, meanwhile, is confident in Ted. He cites his “level head, maturity,” and — perhaps most importantly given today’s audience — the fact that he has kids. “Remember, it’s kids that are voting.”

The menus couldn’t be more different. Red Team is going with a grilled chicken, bacon, and ranch sandwich, sliced apples in a caramel sauce, and mac & cheese — a safe, crowd-pleasing spread. Gordon likes the direction but floats the idea of frying the chicken instead. Blue Team is swinging bigger: a smash burger with special sauce, chips and veggies, orzo mac and cheese, and a lemon cookie. It’s an ambitious menu, and Gordon thinks it’s too much: “Where’s the edit?”

Turns out, Gordon was right. Ted scraps the orzo and ditches the cookie — then brings the orzo back, along with the veggie cups. Then, after a taste test, reverses course again: forget the orzo, bring back the cookie. With their two-cook advantage and a captain flip-flopping on the menu, the Blue Team is a hot mess.

Service

The hungry players are ready — and each kid will grab one meal from the Red Team and one from the Blue Team, taste both, and vote for their favorite. Simple, democratic, and absolutely brutal.

But just before service kicks off, Gordon checks the Red Team’s chicken — and it’s not good. Multiple pieces are undercooked, and Heidi is unraveling at the chicken station. Gordon starts sending kids through the line without chicken, telling them to circle back once it’s ready. “Or maybe come back for salmonella,” he mutters, frustrated. In a classic Gordon moment, he boots a piece of raw chicken across the soccer field.

Meanwhile, Joe circulates through the tables, gathering intel. The early feedback is not encouraging for the Red Team — everyone at Table 1 preferred the Blue Team’s burger, and it isn’t close. With the chicken situation still unresolved, the Red Team has a lot of catching up to do.

The Blue Team isn’t without their own drama. Just when they looked to be pulling ahead, raw burgers start coming off their grill — and Gordon doesn’t hold back. He tosses the blood-red meat onto the turf, leaving Nico in tears. With no burger from the Blue Team for the second batch of taste-testers, the Red Team picks up some free points.

Then things go from bad to worse. The Blue Team’s entire grill station goes up in flames — forcing crew members to dash in from behind the cameras with a fire extinguisher. With one grill still standing, they scramble to finish service and get the remaining kids fed.

The winner

When the final votes are tallied, the kids have spoken: Red Team wins. After all the chaos — raw chicken, a kicked bird, and a grill fire — Team Africa and Team Americas are safe. Dave, who found his voice when it mattered most, heads into next week with a major advantage.

Elimination

That means someone from Team Europe or Team Asia-Pacific has cooked their last dish in the MasterChef kitchen. The judges don’t have to deliberate long. Ted captained a ship that never stopped taking on water. Daniel and Nico, meanwhile, managed to set the entire grill station on fire. All three are called forward — but only one is going home.

That cook is Ted. “A captain needs to be a leader,” Gordon says.

Next Time

The World Cup energy isn’t going anywhere. Next week, the home cooks will each prepare their best dish for a FIFA World Cup watch party — but Dave’s advantage comes into play in a big way. Halfway through the cook, he’ll get to bench one competitor, costing them precious time in the kitchen.
