Following a highly successful festival run and a US theatrical release courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics, Studio Chizu’s stunning new anime feature Scarlet (known in Japan as Hateshi naki Sukâretto) is officially making its US streaming debut on Netflix on June 6th, 2026.
If you are a fan of beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant anime, you are likely already familiar with the visionary work of director Mamoru Hosoda. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind modern anime classics like Mirai, Belle, Wolf Children, and Summer Wars returned in late 2025 with Scarlet, a time-bending, action-packed fantasy adventure.
Now, just a few short months after its US theatrical expansion, the movie is set to make its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) debut right here on Netflix courtesy of the Sony first window deal.
Here is everything you need to know about Scarlet, its impending Netflix US release, and where it’s already available to stream on Netflix.
What is Scarlet about?
Co-produced by Studio Chizu, Nippon TV, and Sony Pictures, Scarlet is heavily inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet—but with a gorgeous, time-traveling anime twist.
The film follows the titular character, Scarlet, a medieval-era sword-fighting princess on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her beloved father. After an initial assassination attempt goes wrong, Scarlet is gravely injured and finds herself trapped in the “Otherworld,” a desolate, surreal plane of existence caught between life and death.
There, she crosses paths with an idealistic young pacifist from our present day. He helps heal her wounds and challenges her deeply rooted need for revenge, showing her the possibility of a future free from bitterness and rage. However, when Scarlet is inevitably thrust back into conflict with her father’s killer, she must face her most daunting battle yet: Can she break the cycle of hatred, or will she succumb to vengeance?
Scarlet has a runtime of 1 hour and 51 minutes and carries a PG-13 / TV-14 maturity rating.
When is Scarlet coming to Netflix US?
Scarlet will officially be available to stream on Netflix US on Saturday, June 6th, 2026.
The film had a rather prestigious journey to our screens. It made its world premiere Out of Competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in September 2025, followed by screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the New York Film Festival.
Sony Pictures Classics handled the North American distribution, giving the film a special awards-qualifying IMAX run in December 2025 before a wider nationwide theatrical release in February 2026. It subsequently hit premium VOD and digital platforms on March 14th, 2026.
