Netflix is losing this controversial Colleen Hoover movie adaptation very soon

There’s only a short amount of time left for subscribers to watch It Ends with Us before the emotional romantic drama officially leaves Netflix in June 2026. The film is scheduled to depart on June 9, marking the end of its streaming availability on the platform.

Based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, It Ends with Us became one of the most talked-about movies of 2024. The adaptation arrived with massive anticipation thanks to Hoover’s devoted fanbase, but once the movie premiered, discussions quickly expanded beyond the film itself. Audiences debated everything from the story’s handling of domestic abuse themes to the behind-the-scenes controversy involving stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.

But despite the polarizing conversations surrounding the film, there’s no denying that it became a huge commercial success. Produced on a relatively modest budget, the movie exploded at the global box office and later found a second life on Netflix after landing on the service in late 2024.

The movie follows Lily Bloom, played by Lively, a woman attempting to rebuild her life in Boston after growing up in an abusive household. Things initially seem hopeful when she meets charismatic neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, portrayed by Baldoni. Their passionate relationship quickly becomes serious, but Lily eventually begins noticing troubling behaviors that force her to confront painful memories from her childhood.

As the story unfolds, Lily’s past reconnects with her present through the return of Atlas Corrigan, her first love played by Brandon Sklenar. Atlas represents safety and emotional stability in contrast to the increasingly volatile relationship between Lily and Ryle. What then starts as a romantic drama slowly transforms into a much heavier story about trauma, abuse, and the difficulty of breaking generational cycles.

One of the biggest reasons It Ends with Us sparked so much discussion is because it refuses to present abuse in simple black-and-white terms. Ryle is not introduced as an obvious villain. He’s charming, successful, affectionate, and emotionally vulnerable. That complexity became central to the movie’s larger conversation online, as viewers debated whether the adaptation handled its subject matter responsibly or unintentionally romanticized toxic relationships.

The controversy surrounding the film only intensified once rumors of tension behind the scenes began circulating during the promotional campaign. Reports of disagreements between Lively and Baldoni quickly became tabloid headlines, with fans dissecting interviews, red carpet appearances, and press tour moments for signs of conflict. Over time, those rumors escalated into legal disputes that kept the movie in the headlines long after its theatrical run had ended.

But even with all the controversy, audiences continued watching the movie in massive numbers. Many viewers connected deeply with Lily’s emotional journey, especially survivors who praised the story’s depiction of how difficult it can be to leave abusive relationships. Others criticized the film’s glossy presentation and marketing strategy. They argued that the promotional campaign leaned too heavily into romance while downplaying the darker subject matter.

That divide helped transform It Ends with Us into something bigger than a typical book-to-screen adaptation. For months, social media platforms were flooded with debates about the characters, performances, and the movie’s overall message. Some viewers passionately defended the film’s emotional realism, while others believed the adaptation softened the harsher elements of Hoover’s novel.

Meanwhile, conversations about a possible sequel adaptation continue to surface. Hoover’s follow-up novel, It Starts with Us, already exists, and fans have repeatedly speculated about whether Hollywood will move forward with adapting it. However, the legal drama surrounding the original film has made the future of the franchise feel uncertain.

The movie’s upcoming Netflix departure is likely tied to Sony’s licensing agreement with the streamer. Of course, streaming departures don’t always mean a title disappears forever. Licensing agreements can be renewed, and some films eventually return after spending time on other platforms. Netflix itself has also become increasingly known for rotating licensed content in and out of its library more aggressively in recent years.

Still, as of now, viewers only have a limited amount of time left to watch It Ends with Us on Netflix before it leaves the platform on June 9. Whether audiences loved the movie, hated it, or simply watched out of curiosity because of the nonstop online discourse, the adaptation undeniably became one of the defining pop culture conversation pieces of 2024.

And even after it departs from Netflix, the debates surrounding it probably won’t be ending anytime soon.
