President Trump Calls Out The NFL Over Driving Up The Cost of TV Amid DOJ Antitrust Probe

As the NFL looks to start new TV rights talks, President Donald Trump has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the increasing financial burden placed on fans as the league expands its reliance on streaming platforms. His comments come as the U.S. Department of Justice continues its examination of potential anticompetitive practices by the NFL that could be disadvantaging consumers nationwide.

Now, President Donald Trump has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the increasing financial burden placed on fans as the league expands its reliance on streaming platforms, according to a report from David Rumsey at Front Office Sport. His comments come as the U.S. Department of Justice continues its examination of potential anticompetitive practices by the NFL that could be disadvantaging consumers nationwide.

The Department of Justice launched its investigation into the NFL last month, focusing on whether the league’s media rights deals and distribution models restrict competition and inflate costs for viewers. Although the probe is underway, the administration has stopped short of committing to specific enforcement measures. Trump indicated his personal unease with the situation, suggesting the league could reduce its profit margins to ensure broader accessibility without sacrificing the product’s quality. He pointed to the passion of fans who center their weekends around the games, arguing that sudden jumps in viewing expenses could erode that enthusiasm.

Industry observers note that while most regular-season contests remain available on free over-the-air networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC—particularly within local markets—the push toward exclusive streaming has added layers of complexity. For the 2025 season, fans seeking comprehensive coverage often needed subscriptions to multiple services, with total costs surpassing $1,000 for full out-of-market access in some cases. Platforms such as Amazon Prime Video have held exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football for several years, while Netflix, Peacock, and YouTube have secured select high-profile broadcasts. YouTube TV continues to manage the popular Sunday Ticket package for games outside a viewer’s home territory. Local blackout rules and home-market requirements help maintain some traditional broadcast availability, but the fragmented ecosystem has fueled complaints about convenience and affordability.

Trump described the situation as disheartening, lamenting any developments that limit the sport’s reach to wide audiences. With the 2026 NFL schedule set for release later this week, expectations are high that additional premium streaming deals will be announced, potentially expanding the number of exclusively digital games and further reshaping how families experience the league.

Beyond financial concerns, the president renewed his criticism of the NFL’s modified kickoff rules, which were introduced in 2024 and adjusted the following year to promote more returns. He characterized the format as difficult to follow and detrimental to the viewing experience, dismissing claims that it meaningfully improves player safety. Trump expressed hope that college football programs would avoid adopting similar changes, preserving what he sees as the traditional excitement of special teams play.

League data from the 2025 season shows a notable rise in concussions, with 168 recorded during games—a 30 percent increase from the 129 tallied the previous year. These figures have intensified debates over whether recent rule modifications are achieving their intended goals or inadvertently altering the fundamental appeal of professional football.

Trump cautioned that repeated experiments with the sport’s structure could backfire, drawing parallels to past attempts by other organizations that ultimately diminished their product’s vitality. He urged careful stewardship to protect football’s status as a beloved American pastime rather than allowing incremental changes to erode its core elements.

The intersection of these issues—skyrocketing access costs, streaming fragmentation, and on-field experimentation—arrives at a pivotal moment for the NFL. As one of the most valuable sports properties globally, the league generates billions in revenue but faces growing scrutiny over how it balances profitability with fan engagement. Consumer advocates have echoed concerns about media rights consolidation, while analysts predict that upcoming schedule announcements could accelerate the streaming transition.

For millions of households, Sunday afternoons have long represented more than entertainment; they serve as communal rituals and family traditions. Any sustained increase in barriers to participation, whether financial or experiential, threatens to disrupt that connection. As the DOJ investigation unfolds and new broadcasting agreements take shape, the coming months will likely determine whether the league can address these tensions or if external pressures will force meaningful adjustments.

Trump’s remarks underscore a broader tension in American sports: maintaining accessibility and tradition in an era of rapid technological and economic change. Football enthusiasts across the country will be watching closely—not just the games themselves, but how league executives and policymakers navigate the challenges ahead.
