Martin Short is breaking his silence on his daughter’s death.

It’s hard to believe it’s nearly been three months since the iconic actor’s daughter Katherine tragically died at just 42 years old. As we know, the Los Angeles Police Department and Fire Department responded to Katherine’s home on February 23, where they heartbreakingly discovered her dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It’s a reality that sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood and fans alike… but none more than for the Short family, themselves.

During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning on Sunday, Martin opened up for the first time about his eldest child’s death:

“It’s been a nightmare for the family.”

We can only begin to imagine…

Prior to Katherine’s passing, Martin’s wife Nancy Dolman, the mother of his three children including Katherine, Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36, tragically passed away of ovarian cancer in 2010. The Short family has endured more in less than two decades than any family should in an entire lifetime…

During his interview, the Only Murders in the Building star went on to compare the diseases his daughter and wife died of:

“But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases, they are terminal.”

How poignant.

Reflecting on Katherine’s battle with mental health, he continued:

“And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn’t.”

So, so, so sad.

The 76-year-old left off:

“Nan’s last words to me were, ‘Mart, let me go.’ And what [Katherine] was just saying was, ‘Dad, let me go.’”

Before her sudden passing, Katherine, a social worker, largely stayed out of the spotlight. Days after her death, Rande Levine, founder of the dog charity Karma Rescue, where Katherine served on the board, opened up to the DailyMail.com about her mental health struggles:

“She was such a wonderful, giving, loving human being. I’m picturing her face right now, laughing. It’s just so devastating to find out she took her own life. I knew she was battling with that stuff. But she put her soul into helping others that were experiencing the same things she was.”

So devastating.

On top of that, Levine revealed Katherine “had been sick, struggling with some sort of physical illness.” He noted at the time:

“She must have been in so much anguish to have done this. It’s just so sad.

Our hearts continue to be with the Short family.
