Another Cable TV Network is Shutting Down its App on Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, & Apple TV This Month

Fox Corporation is preparing to discontinue its standalone Fox Sports application on several leading connected television platforms, marking another step in the ongoing evolution of media delivery for sports content. The shutdown will impact users on Roku devices, Amazon Fire TV sticks and televisions, Google TV systems, and Apple TV hardware, with the change taking effect around May 7. This timeline follows an email notification sent to affected customers on April 7, providing roughly 30 days of advance warning before access ends on those specific devices.

The decision stems from a deliberate strategic realignment by the company. Fox has chosen to focus its streaming efforts on a single, centralized service called FOX One, which serves as the primary destination for sports, news, entertainment, and other programming. By phasing out the dedicated Fox Sports app on television-connected devices, the network aims to reduce fragmentation across multiple applications and encourage viewers to adopt this integrated platform instead. Mobile versions of the Fox Sports app and its website will remain operational in the near term, allowing users on smartphones, tablets, and computers to continue accessing highlights, scores, and select live events without immediate disruption.

FOX One represents a more ambitious offering designed to meet the expectations of today’s cord-cutting audience. The service includes advanced tools such as multiview capabilities that let subscribers watch several live events at once and cloud-based digital video recording features for capturing games and shows without the need for external hardware. These enhancements go beyond what the previous Fox Sports app provided, offering greater flexibility for fans who want to customize their viewing experience. Early performance data shows the platform gaining traction quickly in a competitive market, with subscriber numbers exceeding two million shortly after launch. This growth reflects strong interest from households seeking affordable, direct-to-consumer options for premium content.

Sports coverage on FOX One remains extensive and includes regular broadcasts of United Football League games, Saturday baseball matchups from Major League Baseball, high-stakes NASCAR races such as those held at Talladega, and events from the LIV Golf league. The lineup extends past athletics to incorporate popular entertainment programs, creating a broader appeal that combines live action with on-demand viewing. Subscription models provide flexibility, including standalone access, bundles that pair the service with FOX Nation for additional commentary and specials, or combinations with ESPN offerings. The platform also integrates into larger live television streaming providers such as Fubo, giving existing subscribers an alternative route to the same content without requiring a separate sign-up.

This consolidation fits into larger patterns across the media industry. Other networks have pursued similar paths, retiring individual channel apps in favor of flagship streaming services like Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, and others to strengthen direct relationships with viewers. The approach addresses common frustrations with multiple logins, scattered libraries, and inconsistent interfaces that have characterized the early years of cord-cutting. For Fox, the move underscores confidence in FOX One as the future hub for its audience, allowing the company to allocate resources more efficiently while delivering improved features.
