3 new Netflix movies to stream in May 2026

Netflix is bringing a strong and emotionally varied slate of films in May 2026. From animated body-swap comedy to gender-reversal satire and a deeply emotional mystery drama involving an octopus, this month’s releases show just how wide Netflix is casting its storytelling net!

If you’re looking for something new and exciting to watch, Swapped, Ladies First, and Remarkably Bright Creatures should definitely be at the top of your list for the month of May!

Swapped Production Still | Skydance Animation/Netflix

Swapped

  • Directed by: Nathan Greno
  • Written by: John Whittington, Christian Magalhaes, and Robert Snow
  • Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Juno Temple, Tracy Morgan, Cedric the Entertainer, Justina Machado

Swapped is one of Netflix’s most creative animated releases of 2026, and it’s now streaming on the platform. It takes the familiar storytelling concept of the body swap and places it into a completely unexpected setting, the natural world.

At the center of the story are two animals who could not be more different. Ollie is a small, cautious sea otter-like creature who’s spent his whole life just trying to stay out of trouble in a world full of danger. Ivy, meanwhile, is a powerful bird of prey who sits at the top of the food chain. She’s used to being the one in control.

Under normal circumstances, they’re natural enemies. One is always watching for predators, the other is built to hunt them. But everything flips when a mysterious, magical force suddenly swaps their bodies. From there, things spiral fast.

Ollie is thrown into life as a bird, trying to figure out how to fly, hunt, and survive with instincts that don’t feel like his own. At the same time, Ivy is stuck on the ground in a fragile body where even the smallest sound feels threatening. What then unfolds is a survival story that forces both of them to see the world in a completely new and far more vulnerable way.

Remarkably Bright Creatures

Sally Field as Tova and Marcellus in Remarkably Bright Creatures | Netflix

Remarkably Bright Creatures

  • Release date: May 8, 2026
  • Directed by: Olivia Newman
  • Written by: Newman and John Whittington
  • Cast: Sally Field, Lewis Pullman, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant, Sofia Black-D’Elia

Of the three new Netflix movies on this list, Remarkably Bright Creatures is the most emotionally grounded and introspective. Based on the bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt, the film strips away spectacle in favor of something quieter and more affecting.

It tells a story of grief, the long shadow of unanswered questions, and the unlikely ways connection can form when someone least expects it. The film follows Tova, an elderly widow working the night shift at a small-town aquarium while quietly coping with the personal tragedy of losing her son.

Her isolated routine begins to shift when she forms an unexpected bond with Marcellus, a highly intelligent giant Pacific octopus who observes the world around him with unusual awareness. At the same time, a young man named Cameron arrives in town searching for answers about his identity. This then leads to their stories gradually intertwining in ways neither of them initially understands.

Ladies First

(L-R) Sacha Baron Cohen as Damien Sachs and Rosamund Pike as Alex Fox in Ladies First | Rob Youngson/Netflix

Ladies First

  • Release date: May 22, 2026
  • Directed by: Thea Sharrock
  • Written by: Natalie Krinsky, Cinco Paul, and Katie Silberman
  • Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Emily Mortimer, Charles Dance, Fiona Shaw, Tom Davis, Kathryn Hunter

Closing out the list is Ladies First. Loosely inspired by the French comedy I Am Not an Easy Man, it’s a satirical romantic comedy that flips modern social structures to explore how power shapes behavior.

The movie follows Damien Sachs, a high-powered exec who’s built a life where everything seems to work in his favor. He’s confident, influential, and completely unaware of just how much the world around him has helped him get there.

That all changes when he wakes up in a parallel reality where women hold most of the power across society, and men now find themselves on the other side of the equation. That’s less visible, less influential, and constantly underestimated. Suddenly, Damien isn’t in control anymore. The confidence he once relied on doesn’t carry the same weight, and he’s forced to figure out how to exist in a world where the rules, expectations, and social dynamics feel completely reversed.

A big part of the tension comes from his clash with Alex Fox, a powerful executive who represents everything Damien used to be at the top of her game. Their interactions become a push-and-pull of ego, ambition, and survival as Damien tries to adjust to a reality he never thought he’d have to question.
