I love an intense love triangle when it’s done right, meaning the series doesn’t give away the clear winner a mile away. Netflix’s Crew Girl made waves with its love triangle between Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), Josh Regis (Sam Braun), and Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark). While it initially seemed that Josh was only an arrogant jerk and Cam had a rough exterior, Teagan cracked both of them and saw their softer sides. That made both guys more layered, but it made Teagan’s decision harder. It complicated matters since both guys were also on the varsity rowing team and competing for the…
Day 6 of the Venice Film Festival brings two vastly different visions to the Lido: Florian Zeller’s drama Bunker and Casey Affleck’s multilayered period piece Company. Bunker is a marked improvement over writer-director Florian Zeller’s last outing, The Son, and is as wise and thoughtful as his debut, 2020’s The Father, which earned six Oscar nominations — including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay — and won Anthony Hopkins his second Best Actor statuette. After a rousing reception in Venice, Bunker looks to be in the hunt for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture. Best Director,…
Meanwhile, Sam Braun—the actor behind wealthy golden boy Josh Regis—teased how the actors were able to build the convincing love triangle between Josh, Teagan and Cam that would put Blair, Serena and Nate as well as the endless other unsuccessful Gossip Girl pairings to shame. “So much of the cast are based out of Vancouver,” Braun explained. “So we all knew each other before starting the show and I kind of feel like that’s like a really special chemistry.” But trust, Martineau is first and foremost Team Teagan. “I think we all go through a lot of paths and navigation…
Indian studio Sagar Pictures Entertainment‘s seven-part theatrical franchise adapted from the “Bhagavata Mahapurana” will kick off with “Shrimad Bhagavatam Part I: Vishnurata.” The first teaser poster has been unveiled. The film is scheduled for a global theatrical release in 2027. Vishnurata translates to “the one always protected by Vishnu,” a name traditionally associated with King Parikshit in the “Bhagavata Mahapurana.” The title establishes the spiritual foundation of the franchise, which centers on Lord Shri Krishna and depicts what the studio describes as an expansive spiritual universe built around devotion, dharma and the bond between humanity and the divine. The project…

Though the genre did of course exist before 2017, it feels as though Call Me By Your Name kicked off a boom in the dreamy, summertime coming-of-age movie, of the artier and indie-r variety. If you’ve traveled the festival circuit in the last decade or so, you’ve seen myriad examples of the form: teenagers in sun-kissed locales making first discoveries about themselves, about sexuality, about the grownup world rushing at them. Some have been quite good — the recent Cannes standout La Gradiva comes to mind — while others have been perhaps a little too ethereal, or too interior. Some…

When it comes to the Toronto International Film Festival, 51 is the new 50. Last year’s landmark Golden Anniversary edition of TIFF allowed the annual event to take stock of its five-decade journey from being a hometown celebration for movie buffs to a major international hub for global cinema. Heading into its 51st year, though, TIFF’s longtime CEO Cameron Bailey and the festival’s chief programming officer Anita Lee knew that they had to turn the page forward, not backward. “This year is about us looking forward into the future,” confirms Bailey. In a conversation with Gold Derby, the duo…
