Nemesis season 1 episode 1 honors Herbert Kemp III and Moses Marole with dedication

The premiere of Netflix’s new crime thriller Nemesis doesn’t just launch viewers into a world of high-stakes robberies and escalating police investigations. It also ends on a deeply emotional note. Nemesis season 1 episode 1 concludes with an “in memory of” dedication honoring Herbert Kemp III and Moses Marole. It’s a moment that immediately grounds the series’s fictional chaos in real-world remembrance.

Rather than being directly tied to the production crew or cast, Kemp III and Marole were family members of individuals connected to the broader creative circle behind the show. In fact, we found that Kemp III and Marole were the older brother and father of the show’s creators, Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole.

On March 5, 2023, Courtney posted a picture on her Instagram of her late father and brother, Herbert Kemp Jr. and Herbert Kemp III. In the post’s caption, she reflected on their passing, describing them as “beautiful, strong Black men” who were lost too soon. She also expressed how deeply their absence continues to be felt.

While Courtney didn’t go into detail in the post about how Kemp III died, we learned his cause of death via his online obituary. According to the obituary, Kemp III passed away suddenly on July 28, 2021, at the age of 54 in Hamden, Connecticut, after a brief illness. The obituary also touched on the close bond he had with his sister. He played a formative role in Courtney’s early life, helping teach her foundational skills and consistently supporting her personal and professional growth.

According to the obituary, Kemp III left behind his wife, Felice Gray-Kemp, and their son, Evan James Kemp, as well as his mother, Dolores Cruse Kemp, his sister Courtney Anne Kemp, and his niece Charlotte Agboh. The obituary also notes his mother-in-law, Joan Gray-Dildy, along with a wider extended family spread across the U.S.

However, not much is known about Moses Marole. It’s unknown what he passed away from and when. All that is known is that he was a businessman, community leader, and Tani’s father. In fact, Tani was his firstborn of three kids. While it’s unclear when Marole died, our guess is that he passed away sometime in 2024. Why? Well, his funeral service took place in April 2024. Funerals are typically held shortly after a person’s passing, which is why it’s reasonable to assume he likely died in the weeks leading up to that date.

Ultimately, the dedication in Nemesis season 1 episode 1 served as a quiet but powerful closing note to the premiere. Beyond the high-stakes action and rising tension of its crime-driven narrative, the series briefly stepped back to acknowledge real lives and real loss. In doing so, it added an unexpected emotional layer to an otherwise fast-paced episode.

Our thoughts are with Courtney, Tani, and their families during this time.
