Ahead of Cannes, Mubi has snatched up rights across multiple international territories for Hope, the new sci-fi action thriller from South Korean director Na Hong-Ji (The Wailing, The Yellow Sea), which will premiere in the Cannes competition lineup later this month.

Mubi secured all rights for Hope in Latin America, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Turkey. The company will announce its Hope theatrical release plans in the coming months. After the theatrical bow, the film will move to Mubi’s streaming platform.

Hope is set in Hope Harbor, a remote village near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating North and South Korea. News that a tiger has appeared sets the village in panic, but with the local police chief investigating, he finds an even more shocking reality.

The film features Korean stars Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing), Zo In-sung (Moving) and Hoyeon (Squid Game), alongside Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell and Cameron Brittona. The film was produced by Na’s production banner, Forged Films, and Plus M Entertainment, which is also handling international sales.

Mubi has had success with several of its Cannes acquisitions from last year, including Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Kleber de Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent, and Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident. Mubi is a producer on Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, also premiering in Cannes Competition this year, and on Jane Schoenbrun’s hotly anticipated Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which will be the opening film of the Un Certain Regard sidebar.

Na is represented by UTA, M3 Global Strategy, Ziffren Brittenham, and Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis. Vikander is represented by UTA, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern, Tapestry. Russell is represented by UTA and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark. Fassbender is represented by Conor McCaughan, Range Media Partners, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern, Tapestry. Hoyeon is represented by CAA, BH Entertainment, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern (SOWDLLP), and Apex PR. Britton is represented by UTA, Venture Entertainment Partners, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.
