Last year, Kara Young joined Laurie Metcalf as the second actor in Tony history to have been nominated four years in a row. This year, Young has the potential to become the first to score a bid in five consecutive years with her performance in Proof.
In the first revival of David Auburn’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Young portrays Claire, a practical and business-minded woman who has been comfortably successful in her work and relationships. She has left behind her father, Robert (Don Cheadle), and younger sister, Catherine (Ayo Edebiri), distancing herself from the run-down family home of her youth to make a new life in New York City.
Metcalf’s four consecutive Tony bids were for the following:
- Misery (2016)
- A Doll’s House, Part Two (2017) — won
- Three Tall Women (2018) — won
- Hillary and Clinton (2019)
Meanwhile, Young has received these four Tony nominations:
- Clyde’s (2022)
- Cost of Living (2023)
- Purlie Victorious (2024) — won
- Purpose (2025) — won
Samira Wiley was originally cast as Claire in this revival of Proof, but shortly before previews began, had to withdraw due to a treatable medical condition. So Young ended up taking over. She’s in a role that previously earned Johanna Day a nod for Best Featured Actress in a Play for the original production in 2001.

Critics agree that Young’s performance is Tony nomination worthy. Greg Evans (Deadline) says Young once again “proves her inestimable value to the Broadway stage.” Roma Torre (New York Stage Review) calls Young’s performance “wonderful.” And Emlyn Travis (Entertainment Weekly) found the actress to be “an absolute scene stealer every single second that she stands upon the Booth Theatre stage.”
According to Gold Derby’s current predictions, Young is in fourth place with a 78% chance of netting a Best Featured Actress in a Play bid. She is ahead of Cynthia Nixon (Marjorie Prime) at 59%. The three front-runners in the category are the aforementioned Metcalf (Death of a Salesman) at 97%, June Squibb (Marjorie Prime) at 89%, and Betsy Aidem (Liberation) at 89%.
