One of the 2000s’ most iconic cult horror classics hits Netflix in May 2026

Calling all horror fans! May 2026 is about to be a fantastic month. Netflix is bringing one of the 2000s’ most beloved cult horror classics to its platform, giving audiences old and new the chance to experience a film that has become a defining piece of modern horror culture.

Jennifer’s Body, a darkly comedic and twisted take on the teen horror genre, is finally returning to the spotlight on May 1, 2026, and the excitement among fans is already building. Yes, May 1 is the exact Netflix release date. That said, you might want to mark this date down somewhere so you don’t forget!

Directed by Karyn Kusama and penned by Oscar-winning Diablo Cody, Jennifer’s Body stars Megan Fox as the enigmatic Jennifer and Amanda Seyfried as her loyal, grounded best friend Needy. The film tells a story about friendship, jealousy, betrayal, and the dark twists of adolescence, all wrapped in a horror-comedy package.

Jennifer’s Body is not your typical teen horror flick

The 2009 horror flick is set in the seemingly quiet town of Devil’s Kettle, where Jennifer and Needy have been inseparable since childhood. Jennifer is the epitome of high school popularity. She’s beautiful, confident, and effortlessly charming, while Needy is more reserved, smart, and grounded.

In other words, she’s the perfect counterbalance to her best friend’s magnetic presence. Their bond is strong, but underlying tensions of jealousy and insecurity start to surface, particularly as both girls navigate their teenage social worlds.

The plot then takes a dark turn during a night out when Jennifer is lured into a mysterious ritual by a local rock band, which goes horribly wrong. She becomes possessed by a demonic entity and ultimately transforms into a dangerously seductive predator with an insatiable hunger for human flesh, particularly the boys in the small town.

As the body count continues to rise, Needy is forced to confront the horrifying reality that her best friend is now her greatest threat. She finds herself torn between loyalty and self-preservation as she embarks on a dangerous mission to stop Jennifer before more lives are lost.

What’s so great about Jennifer’s Body is how it manages to be funny, frightening, and surprisingly emotional all at once. While it delivers the blood, scares, and shocking moments you’d expect from a horror movie, it also explores the messy, complicated world of teenage friendship and growing pains.

Fox and Seyfried also really play off of each other well in this film. Their strong chemistry makes the highs and lows of Jennifer and Needy’s friendship feel real, which makes the horror all the more impactful.

Additionally, Jennifer’s Body also shines through its clever dialogue and smart writing, courtesy of Cody. The lines are sharp, witty, and packed with dark humor, which gives the film a unique voice among teen horror movies. Add to that Kusama’s stylish direction, and the result is a film that keeps audiences engaged throughout its entire 1 hour and 45 minute runtime.

While Jennifer’s Body didn’t perform well at the box office upon its initial theatrical release, its reputation has grown steadily over the years. What audiences initially overlooked is now celebrated, and new viewers will soon be able to experience for themselves why Jennifer’s Body has earned its place as a beloved cult classic when it lands on Netflix on May 1!
