For the semifinals of The Voice Season 29, coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine each brought their three strongest artists to the stage to compete for the studio audience vote that would send four artists to Tuesday’s finale. Made up of both superfans and Voice alumni, the audience selected one artist from each team to send to the final round, but because Kelly’s former champs Girl Named Tom and Jake Hoot were victorious in the “All-Star Showdown” on April 6, Team Kelly’s top two artists both advanced to complete a Top 4.

Read on for our The Voice 29 recap of the “Semifinals Top 9” performances which aired Monday, April 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC to find out which artists are chosen to compete in the “Finale Top 4” on Tuesday, April 14.

KJ Willis

Team Legend
Song: “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder
Adam’s comments: “What I love is the major runs. I’ve never heard anyone approach it like that.”
Kelly’s comments: “That’s one hell of a start, man. … You have that preacher-esque power to you that I love. You just naturally have the gift of inspiration.”
John’s comments: “You’ve been doing all secular music on the show, but you can just feel the spirit in you. I feel like you’re going in your own confidence and taking up space on stage.”

Mikenley Brown

Team Kelly
Song: “I’m Not the Only One” by Sam Smith
John’s comments: “Mikenley I am beaming over here. This was easily your best performance. I love the crackling in your voice.”
Adam’s comments: “I think this was definitely your best performance. It was a lot more of what we all loved about you when we first turned around for you in the Blinds. … Your head voice into your falsetto … it’s so beautiful.”
Kelly’s comments: “Believability is a huge thing for me … I buy it from you. … I love that you held back on some of the runs and made them more special.”

Jeremy Keith

Team Adam
Song: “Whip Appeal” by Babyface
Kelly’s comments: “Jeremy you make it look so easy … You have so many gears, not only to your voice, but your energy and the thing is that you’re so humble about it. … What you’re doing is incredibly difficult.”
John’s comments: “This is my favorite performance of yours in this competition … it showed all the things that you have in your toolbox. You were smooth and perfect and pristine and clean at the beginning, but then you growled and were passionate by the end.”
Adam’s comments: “I feel like you accomplished in this performance in my mind, exactly what you set out to come here and do. You had to get out of your head and be that visceral singer.”

Syd Millevoi

Team Legend
Song: “Into You” by Ariana Grande
Adam’s comments: “You’ve got range, girl. … We wanted it to be a little more kind of in the moment and we wanted to feel more passion, and you definitely took the notes so I applaud you making that effort.”
Kelly’s comments: “You are incredible and one of my favorites of the whole season … You have such a gift.”
John’s comments: “This is my favorite performance of yours because I really did love how soulful you were. … I really loved how you embraced the energy of the song. … You just have a magnificent instrument as a vocalist and I thought you deployed it really beautifully today.”

Jared Shoemaker

Team Adam
Song: “Soulshine” by Allman Brothers Band
Kelly’s comments: “We got to see you in a different space, in a different light tonight, and the strategy of that is so important.”
John’s comments: “It was compelling and it really did show a different side of you.”
Adam’s comments: “You’re like a star … there’s something iconic about you … and then you have this beautiful voice. … It really is very classic.”

Liv Ciara

Team Kelly
Song: “Flashdance… What a Feeling” by Irene Cara
John’s comments: “That was like a superstar performance. You looked and sounded and carried yourself like you were supposed to be here and you’re supposed to be making records and playing in arenas.”
Adam’s comments: “I think that right this moment you would win The Voice. … I’m a huge fan of yours.”
Kelly’s comments: “I wanna tell everyone right now I had absolutely zero to do with any of that. She did everything, she completely came up with all of that. … I’m just so excited to have been a tiny minuscule of a participant.”

Alexia Jayy

Team Adam
Song: “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” by Aretha Franklin
Kelly’s comments: “I have been looking forward to this moment for so long … you are so gifted. I loved the whole thing.”
John’s comments: “I think you’re so wonderful. You exude so much creative energy and positive energy. You’re elegant and cool at the same time, classy and fashionable and rock ‘n’ roll and soulful. You’re an artist’s artist.”
Adam’s comments: “You’re like the best singer ever and I love you so much. … You have this larger-than-life persona that you put out and you exude when you’re doing your thing.”

JW Griffin

Team Kelly
Song: “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground” by Willie Nelson
John’s comments: “It was really lovely. That intimacy and heart that you put into that performance, it really gave us a chance to appreciate the texture of your voice.”
Adam’s comments: “There is so much about what makes a voice great, it is not so overt. I think you really exemplify that.”
Kelly’s comments: “I always come back to your voice … there’s something so true and raw. … What a blessing to have a gift that just makes someone just feel amazing on the inside.”

Lucas West

Team Legend
Song: “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney
Adam’s comments: “That song requires everything from the person singing it. … I don’t think there’s one part of your voice that can’t be firing at all cylinders … there’s just something about your voice that is so captivating.”
Kelly’s comments: “There are very few artists I would go to a stadium for. … You are the one performer tonight that I do think would just crush in that environment. You have so much power to your voice; so much conviction, so much soulfulness … the whole experience is just awesome to behold.”
John’s comments: “You are the whole package. You are an artist’s artist … you’re tackling these really big songs by big artists. … You come out here and you really deliver electric, energetic, beautiful, soulful performances.”
