Having now topped the domestic box office for the sixth weekend in a row, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in rarefied air. This past weekend, it became only the second movie in history to gross more than $900 million at the domestic box office. The film’s global haul now stands at $2.4 billion, making it the third-biggest hit of all time, behind only Avengers: Endgame and Avatar. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s success is all the more remarkable because it came on the heels of the epic Spider-Man: No Way Home, whose multiverse-hopping narrative seemed impossible to top. As it turns out, fans were hungry for a more grounded Spider-Man adventure, and that’s exactly what Spider-Man: Brand New Day gave them.
The new movie, marking Tom Holland‘s fourth time leading a Spider-Man adventure, also brought back Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, with Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, and Sadie Sink playing pivotal supporting characters. Mark Ruffalo, meanwhile, returned as The Incredible Hulk/Bruce Banner in one of his signature extended cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking of which, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has almost single-handedly turned the trajectory of the MCU around, setting up this December’s Avengers: Doomsday for success. By then, it will likely have become the highest-grossing movie in domestic box-office history.

With $18 million in its sixth weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s running domestic haul stands at $917 million against a reported budget of $225 million. This puts it less than $20 million short of overtaking the $936 million record of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which cost a record $638 million to produce. Released in 2015, the seventh installment of the Skywalker Saga was a critical and commercial smash, grossing more than $2 billion worldwide. It inspired two follow-ups — Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Unlike that trilogy, Holland’s Spider-Man series has continued to receive positive reviews.
