Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly

Coming to Netflix: September 1

To date, Netflix has released over 25 sports documentaries under the Untold umbrella. The series even branched out into spinoff Untold UK earlier this year. Next up in the series is Untold: Raygun: Breaking Badly, depicting the rise, fall, and ultimate reinvention of polarizing figure Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn — an Australian academic and former competitive breakdancer. At the 2024 Olympics, she he lost all three of her round-robin battles, and failed to score any points or votes from the judges. Her routine was highly unorthodox in the sport, sparking huge viral engagement. 

The documentary features interviews with Raygun herself, as well as her family and coach. 

Turning Point: Generation 9/11

Netflix’s Turning Point series of documentaries has previously explored the Vietnam War and the Cold War. As we enter twenty-five years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, this documentary explores how that single day shaped the next generation. It looks back at how the attacks shaped society, from children who lost their parents in the attacks, to journalists who cut their teeth on the original War on Terror, to young Afghans and Marines forced to deal with the fallout of America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Turning Point: Generation 9/11 comes from acclaimed director Brian Knappenberger, who has previously worked on The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz. He also worked on the original Turning Point: 9/11 on Netflix, which released back in 2021. 

Fito Paez: The World Within a Song

Coming to Netflix: September 3

11-time Latin Grammy Award winner and U.S. Grammy winner Fito Paez is one of the biggest names in the Argentine music industry. A bonafide rockstar, this documentary pulls back the curtain and offers a broad reflection on life, love and music through extensive interviews and unprecedented access. 

The film is described as an intimate look into his life, with cameras joining him for a journey of over a year of recordings, rehearsals, and performances across the world. For fans of Fito Paez, this is an absolute must-watch. 

Teenage Wasteland

New feature documentary Teenage Wasteland comes from acclaimed filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine, the duo behind The Mission (2023)  and Boys State (2020).

Originally titled Middletown, the upcoming documentary Teenage Wasteland uses archival footage, interviews, and student diaries to revisit a case back in 1991 when a DIY student who, along with an eccentric teacher and high school journalists, uncovered a toxic waste and local organized crime scandal. Decades later, they look back on its impact. 

Untold Mr.T: I Pity The Fool

Coming to Netflix: September 8

Directed by Scott Weintrob (Top Gear, Fastest Car), this Untold documentary explores one of the biggest media figures of his time: Mr. T. It harkens back to before the gold chains, the signature mohawk, and his immense Hollywood fame of The A-Team and Rocky III, chronicling the life of Laurence Tureaud and his legendary origin story. 

Ironically, in this documentary, there’s plenty of time for jibba-jabba, with Mr. T providing extensive interviews throughout.

The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part

Coming to Netflix: September 30

Netflix has been killing it with true crime documentaries in recent months, and next up is The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part, following a relentless journalist and a steadfast detective as they unravel a 30-year web of crime tied to a charismatic predator, who is known for suspicious deaths and failed marriages. 

The documentary comes from Chris Smith, who is best known for his work as a producer on smash-hit Tiger King (2020).

Folktales

Coming to Netflix: September 4

Sundance hit Folktales is making its major SVOD debut on Netflix this September. A visually stunning, cozy, and moving coming-of-age story, Folktales sees a group of teenagers transported to Pasvik Folk High School in the Finnmark region of Arctic Norway — a place remote and secluded. There, the teens rely less on their smartphones and modern technology, and more on surviving the wilderness, and making friends with Siberian huskies.

The documentary is directed by Oscar-nominated duo Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, who are best known for their work on Jesus Camp, The Boys of Baraka, and Detropia. 

Tribeca 25

Coming to Netflix: September 11

From acclaimed director Matt Tyrnauer, feature-length documentary Tribeca 25 chronicles 25 years of the iconic New York film festival founded by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. Since its inception, Tribeca has become one of the world’s most prominent film festivals. This film is a deep dive into his history, its roots in New York, and it explores how storytelling helped rebuild a community in the aftermath of 9/11.

The film features exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in the industry, not least Robert De Niro himself. Others involved include Martin Scorsese, Bono, Whoopi Goldberg, Nas, Jon M. Chu, and Nia DaCosta.

The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocalypticist 

Coming to Netflix: September 15

Artificial Intelligence is the technological zeitgeist of the modern age. It has injected itself into almost every aspect of everyday life, whether jarringly or not. Love it or loathe it, the AI cat is out the bag, and it’s here to stay. 

Directed by Oscar-winner Daniel Roher and produced by Daniel Kwan, the Sundance documentary tackles the rapidly evolving, frighteningly fast boom of artificial intelligence. As an expecting father, Roher looks at the dangers of AI through the anxieties of a father. What will his child inherit? 

The documentary features interviews with prominent industry names, including Yuval Harari, the best-selling writer of Sapiens, and billionaire Elon Musk, one of the biggest names pushing AI.  The movie is coming to Netflix as part of Netflix’s first window deal with Universal. 

I Survived a Serial Killer (Season 1)

A&E’s true crime docu-series I Survived a Serial Killer is headed to Netflix. Debuting back in 2021, the 16-episode season chronicles the stories of survivors who share their chilling, first-hand accounts of encounters with a serial killers and how they overcame the situations. 

Manny (2014)

One interesting documentary Netflix has picked up is Manny (2014), which chronicles the life of professional boxer Manny Pacquiao, from his days of poverty, to boxing glory, to his eventual entrance into acting and the world of Philippine politics.

Netflix picking up this documentary comes as no surprise with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing match originally set for September 19. The match has since been postponed until 2027.
