Ten months after first hitting airwaves, Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas” has entered rarified air on Billboard‘s Hot 100. The country crossover mega-hit has officially topped the charts for 19 non-consecutive weeks, making it the track with the second-most time at No. 1, tied with “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X (and featuring Billy Ray Cyrus) and “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey.
And while the 22-week record may be in sight for Langley and “Choosin’ Texas,” the particular song that occupies that spot may make it difficult to topple for good. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey holds the title alone, and even if Langley does tie the Yuletide classic with three more weeks at No. 1 or pass it with four, the holidays are only a few months away.
Regardless of whether Langley ends up breaking Carey’s record (however temporarily), its achievement is certainly worth noting, especially as the window for Grammy consideration comes to a close this Friday. “Choosin’ Texas” is all but guaranteed to factor into several major races, given its record-breaking popularity.
But what does its staying power on the charts mean for Langley’s chances of taking home a golden gramophone in February?
As a country song, “Choosin’ Texas” may have a harder row to hoe when it comes to potentially winning Record of the Year. Only two tracks from the genre have been victorious in that category’s history, “Not Ready to Make Nice” by the Chicks and “Need You Now” by Lady A.
A look at Langley’s fellow record holders may also through her chances into question.
In 2020, Lil Nas X rode his massive hit to six Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year. Those nods resulted in just two wins (both outside of the top categories) — Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video.
Shaboozey had an even less successful go of it, despite earning a Song of the Year nomination off of “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The year following that track’s release, the singer was completely shut out at the Grammys, losing every category in which he was nominated. He would eventually take home his first Grammy the following year, but not for his primary chart-topper. His collaboration with Jelly Roll, “Amen,” won Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2026.
But as there’s currently no end in sight for Langley’s run on the Hot 100, her Grammys odds may not be comparable to her current fellow number twos. In Gold Derby’s predictions, Langley is the favorite for a Best New Artist nod and is well within nomination range for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, though ranking behind the likes of Olivias Rodrigo and Dean.
