According to Netflix’s official synopsis, this modern interpretation of Steinbeck’s 1952 masterpiece will “explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.”
Zoe Kazan, who serves as Co-Showrunner, Writer, and Executive Producer on the series, told Netflix that finding the right Cathy was paramount to the project’s success. “I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good,” Kazan said. “She [Florence Pugh] is the exact right person to play Cathy.”
Vanity Fair Drops Exclusive Details with Creator Zoe Kazan
Alongside Netflix’s official date drop, Vanity Fair published an exclusive deep-dive interview with Zoe Kazan today, and it gave us some fantastic behind-the-scenes tidbits.
Notably, Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, famously directed the 1955 James Dean film adaptation of the novel. However, Zoe’s vision is a much more complete adaptation of the sprawling book. Kazan spent years writing the scripts—literally typing the letters C, A, and L off her laptop keyboard—with a specific goal to properly center Cathy’s perspective. She told Vanity Fair it was vital to find the character’s humanity without “defanging” one of literature’s most complex psyches or making excuses for her horrible actions.
The Vanity Fair piece also sheds light on the rest of the phenomenal ensemble. Challengers breakout Mike Faist and Christopher Abbott play the deeply contrasting brothers Charles and Adam Trask, while Hoon Lee takes on the pivotal role of Lee—a character Kazan worked closely with writer Alexander Chee to update, stripping away the midcentury racism of the novel while honoring the character’s profound moral center. For the Trask twins, the production cast Joseph Zada (We Were Liars) as Cal and Joe Anders as Aron. We also learned that despite the story’s heavy California roots in the Salinas Valley, the series was actually shot in New Zealand starting in late 2024 to accommodate budget realities.
