Live 24/7 Local News is Coming to Local ABC, CBS, FOX, & NBC Stations

The E.W. Scripps Company is eliminating 268 positions as part of a major strategic overhaul aimed at prioritizing 24/7 streaming and reshaping its digital news operations. President and CEO Adam Symson detailed the changes in a memo distributed to staff on Tuesday, framing the moves as essential to aligning the 150-year-old media company with shifting audience habits and building a more sustainable business model.

The reductions come as Scripps departs from traditional broadcast daypart schedules that have defined local television for decades. Instead, the company plans to launch continuous local news streams, beginning in roughly one dozen smaller markets before expanding the approach across its full portfolio of stations. Stories will be published as soon as they are ready rather than held for fixed time slots, enabling more reporters to remain active in their communities and deliver updates throughout the day. Linear broadcast programming will continue for viewers who still rely on traditional schedules, but resources and attention are shifting toward social platforms and streaming services where audiences increasingly gather.

Central to the transformation is a new hub model for digital news production. Work that does not require local replication will be consolidated into centralized teams, allowing individual stations to concentrate on community-specific reporting. The hubs will oversee broader digital strategy, enforce consistent best practices, and drive efficiency across the organization. In markets where Scripps has recently formed duopolies, including Lexington, Colorado Springs, and Twin Falls, further operational consolidations are underway. These steps free resources previously spent competing for the same limited set of stories so they can instead support deeper local coverage.

Technology and artificial intelligence form another pillar of the initiative. Scripps is reorienting its technology group to emphasize automation as a core operational enabler. Internal AI tools already developed by employees are streamlining production workflows, reducing the personnel needed for routine tasks and redirecting capacity toward field reporting. The company views this technology focus as the difference between mere cost reduction that preserves an outdated structure and genuine reinvention that creates a more responsive news organization.

The job cuts and structural changes are presented as necessary to secure a cost base that can support the company’s long-term mission. By concentrating on streaming and digital platforms, centralizing non-local functions, leveraging scale in dual-station markets, and deploying automation, Scripps aims to evolve beyond legacy broadcast constraints. Leadership is scheduled to provide additional details during the upcoming quarterly earnings call and an all-employee town hall set for Friday, August 7.

This refounding effort reflects broader pressures facing local media companies as viewing habits continue to migrate online. Scripps is positioning itself to meet audiences where they are, delivering news continuously rather than according to rigid clock cycles. The hub approach is expected to standardize quality and speed across digital products while preserving the local character of reporting that remains the company’s core strength. Automation is intended to handle repetitive production work so human journalists can spend more time gathering information and building relationships in the communities they serve.

In the dozen initial markets selected for 24/7 streams, the continuous format will test the model’s ability to sustain engagement and advertising support around the clock. Success there is expected to guide the subsequent rollout to larger stations. Meanwhile, the consolidation of digital operations into hubs is designed to eliminate duplicated effort and accelerate the adoption of effective practices company-wide. In the duopoly markets, shared resources between co-owned stations are projected to yield both cost savings and richer coverage by reducing internal competition for the same stories.

Taken together, the personnel reductions, streaming expansion, hub centralization, and technology investments constitute a comprehensive pivot. Scripps is betting that a leaner cost structure focused on continuous digital delivery and field-based reporting will prove more durable than clinging to traditional broadcast rhythms. The coming earnings discussion and town hall will offer further clarity on timelines, market priorities, and how the remaining workforce will be organized to execute the new strategy. As the company moves forward, the emphasis remains on adapting its 150-year legacy to the realities of modern media consumption while maintaining a commitment to local journalism.
