Horror is often seen as a gateway genre for actors and filmmakers, not to mention other artists in different creative departments. Because the genre has a devoted audience and is relatively inexpensive to dabble in, it attracts talented filmmakers looking to prove themselves and level up. For instance, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta broke out in the indie space, but graduated in Hollywood thanks to the Jordan Peele-produced horror movie Candyman. Her fellow Marvel alum, Elizabeth Olsen, has starred in several small-scale projects after appearing as Wanda Maximoff in the MCU. Just last year, she played the lead role alongside Miles Teller and Callum Turner in the fantasy rom-com Eternity. But Olsen was attempting ambitious genre projects even before she could get a movie green-lit by herself.
One of her most interesting early movies is currently available on Netflix domestically, but it won’t stick around for much longer. The movie in question was a remake of a Uruguayan horror film, which generated buzz globally for being shot in an unbroken single take. Or, at least that’s the illusion it left audiences under. The remake starring Olsen replicated the illusion for American audiences, received largely positive reviews, and ended up turning a neat profit.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Inventive Horror Movie Disappears From Netflix Soon
We’re talking, of course, about the Uruguayan movie La Casa Muda and its English-language remake, Silent House. Directed by Laura Lau and Chris Kentis, Silent House premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 and was released domestically by Open Road Film. It grossed $13 million against a reported budget of $2 million, delivering a 6x return on investment, minus marketing and distribution costs. Silent House holds a 42% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Silent House is more technically proficient and ambitious than most fright-fests, but it also suffers from a disappointing payoff.” The movie is currently available to stream on Netfilx, but it’ll be removed from the platform on July 8. Olsen made her MCU debut only four years later, with Avengers: Age of Ultron. She reprised her role as Wanda in the Disney+ series WandaVision, and was a major part of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
