Plex Launches New Social Features to Make Streaming Discovery Easier as Lifetime Pass Price Hike Looms

Plex is rolling out a new set of social features designed to make it easier for users to discover what to watch across streaming services. The company says the update will add shared and importable user-curated Lists, public Discussions, and a personalized rating system called Match Score that predicts how much someone will enjoy a title. Plex says the move is meant to turn entertainment discovery into a more community-driven experience, with recommendations and conversations powered by people users trust.

Plex is turning streaming discovery into a social experience

According to Plex, users have already made more than 100 million watching decisions per month and created more than 45 million watchlists, giving the company a large base of activity to build on. The new features are aimed at helping viewers navigate an increasingly fragmented streaming landscape, where content is spread across multiple apps and services.

The social update includes several new tools and features. Lists are available now for all Plex users, with an enhanced version coming later this year. Discussions will roll out this month, while other features will arrive over the rest of the year. Plex also says users will eventually be able to import lists from other platforms, react and comment on friends’ lists, follow movies, shows, cast, and crew, and use image-based comments in conversations.

“Streaming has become increasingly fragmented, and discovery stays focused within individual content silos locked behind each platform’s closed algorithms. We believe the future of entertainment discovery is social and trust-driven,” said Scott Olechowski, co-founder and chief product officer at Plex. “Because Plex isn’t tied to any single content library or service, we can build something no one else can: a shared discovery experience powered by people you trust, conversations, and community.”

Don’t forget: the Plex Lifetime Pass is about to get much more expensive

This rollout comes as Plex users are also facing a major pricing change. Plex announced that its Lifetime Plex Pass is rising from $249.99 to $749.99, with the new price taking effect on July 1. Existing Lifetime Pass holders keep their benefits, but new subscribers can still lock in the lower price before the increase hits.

Plex says it has considered discontinuing the Lifetime Pass altogether, but instead is raising the price to better reflect the ongoing value of the software it plans to continue building. The company also says it is working on additional improvements for pass holders, including download upgrades, playlist creation and editing in mobile apps, restored music and photo library support in mobile and TV apps, NFO metadata support, more server and library management tools, audio enhancements, and IPv6 support.

Why now is the time to sign up

For anyone who has been thinking about a Plex Lifetime Pass, the clock is ticking. Plex says the current $249.99 price remains available only until July 1, when it jumps to $749.99. The company also offers a Plex Remote Watch Pass for $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year, along with a standard Plex Pass priced at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

That makes now the best time for new users to jump in before the price increase lands, especially as Plex adds more social discovery tools and continues expanding the platform
