It’s the end of the road for Staten and Quinn. Netflix has officially decided not to move forward with a third season of its romantic drama Ransom Canyon, bringing the Jodi Thomas adaptation to a close after two seasons.
As first broken by Deadline, Netflix has opted to cancel the Texas-set romance starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly just a month and a half after its sophomore season dropped on July 23, 2026.
For close readers of What’s on Netflix, the writing has unfortunately been on the wall for a little while now, and despite a last-minute push from the actors over the weekend (and a now-deleted post by Garett Wareing, which suggested the show may be coming to an end a few weeks ago), it wasn’t enough to save the show.
This marks Duhamel’s second high-profile cancelation for Netflix following Jupiter’s Legacy cancelation in 2021.
The series was already on borrowed time going into its second season. After a respectable but quiet premiere back in 2025, the show was strictly on the bubble. It ultimately scored a Season 2 renewal over two months after its debut, but it came with some heavy caveats: a reduced episode count (eight episodes down from ten) and a massive creative overhaul that included shaking up the supporting cast.
Why was Ransom Canyon canceled?
As we laid out in our Season 3 renewal expectations guide, Ransom Canyon was always going to come down to Netflix’s favorite metric: cost versus performance.
While the creative reset in Season 2 was reportedly better received internally by Netflix executives, the viewership numbers simply didn’t follow. As we covered in our Top 10 Report for the week of July 27 – August 2, 2026, the show suffered a massive sophomore slump.
Ransom Canyon returned to a rather dismal 4.1 million views in its first week of release. As we noted in our deeper dive into the viewership data, that represented a steep 43% drop from Season 1’s opening week of 7.2 million views.
Stacked against other returning Netflix shows, the issue for Ransom Canyon becomes even more stark:
While Season 2’s release did manage to pull Season 1 back into the weekly Top 10 for a brief bump, the new season ran out of steam incredibly fast. Ultimately, Ransom Canyon season 2 spent 3 weeks in Netflix’s global top 10, amassing 76.1 million viewing hours and 12.3 million completed views.
When you pair those dwindling numbers with a sizable budget—driven heavily by its marquee leads—the math simply didn’t work out, particularly for a high-budget drama like this, whereas comedy series are a bit more lenient with renewals.
A (Mostly) Happy Ending for Fans
If there is a silver lining to this cancellation, it’s that fans won’t be left dangling over a massive cliffhanger like they were at the end of Season 1.
Showrunner April Blair and the writing team left Staten and Quinn in a very good place by the end of Season 2. Following a season that tested the star-crossed lovers—including Quinn’s brief engagement to someone else—the finale saw the duo definitively back together. That said, some plotlines will remain forever unresolved. The Season 2 finale was designed as a “launchpad” for the next story, setting up a love triangle for Ellie (Marianly Tejada) and teasing a much larger Season 3 role for Staten’s half-brother, Levi (Steve Howey). Sadly, we’ll never get to see those Texas ranching dynasties completely unravel.
Ransom Canyon joins a growing list of shows on the Netflix chopping block this year.
