The 29th season of South Park arrives next week on Comedy Central and Paramount+, officially making it eligible for the 2027 Emmys. The awards campaign starts now!
The animated hit has jokingly rebranded itself as South America, in a nod to President Donald Trump‘s penchant for adding “America” to the names of lakes, a gulf, and even a state. Lampooning the current POTUS was key to South Park winning Best Animated Program over the weekend for the first time since 2013. The episode “Sermon on the ‘Mount” was submitted for Emmy consideration and depicted a completely naked Trump newly in love with Satan.
“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to South America,” co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone revealed on Tuesday. “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
Shortly after South Park‘s weekend Emmy victory, the show’s social media account (which has also been renamed to South America) congratulated the president, saying, “You finally got your Emmy.” That was a jab at the fact that he was twice-nominated as a producer of The Apprentice, but never won. Meanwhile, his political rival, former President Barack Obama, has three Emmys.
In response to the anti-Trump rhetoric in last year’s episodes, the administration blasted South Park as a “fourth-rate show” with “uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.” TV critics and fans, meanwhile, praised the show’s fearless satire, particularly its attacks on Paramount, its streaming home, for its Trump-approved merger with Skydance Media.
Season 29 will consist of six episodes and air every other Wednesday, on Sept. 16, Sept. 30, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 11, and Nov. 25. The 30th anniversary of South Park will occur next year on Aug. 13, 2027.
