Summer might technically be over, but Netflix is helping bridge the gap into fall with the new teen drama series Crew Girl.
Miku Martineau leads the series as the titular crew girl, a teenager whose life flips upside down and lands her at a new school as the only girl on the boys’ rowing team. Crew Girl earns TV-14 age rating
Because recent teen dramas like Off Campus and Sterling Point have been a bit more on the racier, TV-MA side with heightened language, nudity, and sexual situations, it’s natural that parents might be wondering what’s in store when they turn on Crew Girl. In this case, you don’t have to worry about inappropriate content as Netflix has given the series a TV-14 age rating.
Crew Girl hasn’t been targeted to mature audiences and appears to be a teen series actually made for teens. According to the show’s official page on Netflix, the TV-14 rating was given due to language and other suggestive dialogue. There’s no warnings for nudity or sexual situations, meaning the most parents have to worry about is their kids hearing some light expletives.
Based on the show’s first-look images and trailer, there will be a significant amount of minor nudity in the form of shirtless male characters. They are also wearing skin-tight uniforms that some viewers might view in a certain light but aren’t meant to be sexual at all. Apart from these instances, there doesn’t seem to be any concerns for racy content in the series.
What to know before the show premieres
As mentioned above, Crew Girl tells the story of Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), a teenager who’s forced to relocate with her mother back to her small East Coast hometown. Teagan was a star rower at her old school, but when she lands at her new elite school, she’s forced to fight her way onto the boys’ crew team and try to fit in among new friends, enemies, and love interests.
When it comes to love interests, Teagan becomes the center point of a love triangle between rich golden boy Josh Regis (Samuel Braun) and scholarship kid Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark). There’s no love lost between Josh and Cam, and Teagan entering the picture will surely create even more waves between them and their Easton Prep rowing team.
Because it’s been the year of page-to-screen television adaptations, especially in the teen and sports drama spaces, some might wonder if Crew Girl is based on a book. Don’t go rushing to the bookstore. The series was not based on a book and was created by Vivian Lin, though some of the show’s plots and tropes might be familiar to book readers and teen drama fans.
