Talk about a whirlwind weekend. Just two days after being canceled (in a classic Friday news dump) by Prime Video, Spider-Noir won five Emmy Awards for cinematography, sound editing, stunt coordination, title design, and visual effects at Sunday’s Creative Arts ceremony.
The superhero series starred Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a grizzled version of Spider-Man. It was a critical hit for its first (and only) season, earning a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 72 on Metacritic. The series was produced through a deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, and offered fans the choice to watch in either black-and-white or full color, a television first.
After winning Best Stunt Coordination on Sunday, Freddy Bouciegues (supervising stunt coordinator) and Hugh Aodh O’Brien (stunt coordinator) told the press room that the cancellation didn’t dampen their spirits. “We are super happy … We got to do everything we wanted,” they said.
Asked whether they hoped their Emmy win would prompt Prime Video to un-cancel Spider-Noir, the stunt coordinators told Gold Derby with a chuckle, “I wish. Tell us who to call!” They noted, “That’s not our department.”
The sound editing team added backstage that the cancellation was “out of our hands.” They remained hopeful that they’ll all be working together again one day on another project.
