Well, its star has been around for some time and the stories tend to be based around him more than any other actors. The world’s biggest movie star re-emerged from the sea in 2014 to restart the most titanic of franchises, and now, he’s storming onto a new platform.
Godzilla is now streaming on Paramount+ after joining the platform on September 1. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), this epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. Just what we’ve always asked for, scientists poking their noses where they don’t belong and unleashing gigantic beasts on us.

Was ‘Godzilla’ a Success?
Godzilla earned generally positive reviews upon its release and currently holds a 76% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 66% audience score. The critical consensus praised Edwards for balancing the movie’s enormous monster spectacle with enough human drama to restore some of the franchise’s former glory. There was some quite amusing criticism from Japan too, regarding the design of Godzilla. The Japanese believed, to be frank, Godzilla was “too fat” and ended up body-shaming a giant lizard. Terrible.
The reboot was also a considerable commercial success, earning $529.1 million worldwide against a reported $160 million production budget. More importantly, its success gave Warner Bros. and Legendary the foundation for an entire cinematic universe. The studios formally announced their shared monster franchise the following year, with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters,Godzilla vs. Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire taking it way beyond what we saw with this original movie. The franchise continues next year with the release of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
