Best Movies Streaming in September 2026: Toy Story 5, Backrooms, More

Disney and Pixar’s animated blockbuster “Toy Story 5” arrives on Disney+ this month after earning $1.13 billion and counting at the summer box office, which makes it the third highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far (trailing “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey”). The sequel was also named one of Variety’s best movies of the year so far: “It escalates in delight (the climactic wedding ceremony must be seen to be believed), but it also has moments that hit you like a gut punch. The message is: Slow down, be real and play. The fun you take is equal to the fun you make.”

Kane Parsons’ horror smash “Backrooms” arrives on HBO Max this month after becoming A24’s highest-grossing movie of all time with $394 million at the worldwide box office. “As an atmospheric freakout, ‘Backrooms’ is extraordinarily effective,” Variety‘s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his positive review, noting that Chiwetel Ejiofor was “the perfect presence to have at the center.” He also compared Parsons’ fixation for mood and “cosmic sound design” to the late David Lynch.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” suffered at the summer box office with an $81 million domestic debut, an underwhelming start for a “Star Wars” movie. The film went on to earn $345 million worldwide, far below the billion-dollar grosses of the previous “Star Wars” film releases “The Rise of Skywalker” and “The Last Jedi.” But can “The Mandalorian and Grogu” rebound on streaming? Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie follows bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his apprentice, Grogu, as they’re recruited by officer Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) to aid the New Republic. The unlikely duo must rescue the heir to Jabba the Hutt, Rotta the Hutt (voiced by “The Bear’s” Jeremy Allen White), in order to track down an Imperial leader.

“Scary Movie,” also known as “Scary Movie 6,” is now streaming on Paramount+ after delighting the box office with a strong $231 million worldwide. An extended cut of the movie is also now streaming on the same platform. Returning cast members include Marlon Wayans (Shorty Meeks), Shawn Wayans (Ray), Anna Faris (Cindy Campbell) and Regina Hall (Brenda Meeks). Faris and Hall reprised their roles after neither appeared in “Scary Movie 5.”

“Supergirl” soars to streaming on HBO Max on Sept. 10. There will also be an American Sign Language (ASL) version of “Supergirl” available to stream performed by Catalene Sacchetti (“Songs in Sign Language”) and directed by Jonaz McMillan (“The Pitt with ASL” Season One). Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the adaptation is based on the DC comic series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King. In the comic, Supergirl and a young alien girl named Ruthye travel across the galaxy to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hill after he murders Ruthye’s father.

Per Netflix: “In Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’, the couples reunite in celebration as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question, why did they get married… again?” The cast includes Tyler Perry, Taraji P. Henson, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Sharon Leal and more.

“Room” breakout Jacob Tremblay is all grown up in Netflix’s “Unabomber,” where he stars in the title role. The movie tracks Ted Kaczynski’s transformation from 16-year-old Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber. Per Netflix: “Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Russell Crowe), Kaczynski’s troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller (Shailene Woodley), brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation.”

Camille Cottin and the rest of the “Call My Agent!” gang return for the feature film follow-up. Per Netflix: “Five years after the agency closed its doors, Andréa is finally ready to direct her first feature film. When her lead actor quits and she falls out with her producer, she joins forces with Noémie—now a successful reality TV producer—believing she can easily manipulate her. But as she faces a complete recasting, on-set disasters, and a legal battle threatening the custody of her daughter, everything begins to unravel.”

 Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman hope to deliver a romance knockout for Amazon Prime Video with the launch of “The Love Hypothesis,” based on the best-selling novel by Ali Hazelwood. Per the synopsis: “Olive (Reinhart), a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia, realizes her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), so Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) to prove she’s moved on. What begins as a desperate act of friendship spirals into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement.”

Directed by Adam Shankman, “Stop That Train!” stars RuPaul as President Gagwell and “Drag Race” alumni Ginger Minj and Jujubee as best friends who work on the glitzy Glamazonian Express train. When a catastrophic “Stormaganza” threatens to derail the high-speed locomotive and crash it into Los Angeles, the duo in coach must join forces with the snobby first class attendants (Raven-Symone, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Marcia Marcia Marcia) to save the day. Matt Rogers, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rachel Bloom, Lisa Rinna and Nicole Richie also star in the film.

Gal Gadot is top billed in Prime Video’s real-time action thriller “The Runner.” Per the streamer: “Maia Marten (Gal Gadot) has built her life on being one step ahead — a sharp, resourceful, high-powered lawyer at the top of London’s legal world.  During her routine morning run, a single phone call shatters her world: her son has been taken. The instructions to get him back are simple and merciless — keep moving, follow every command, and tell no one. Stop, and he dies. Forced to sprint through the city and obey a series of sinister commands, Maia must confront an impossible question: how far will she go to bring her son home?”

A ticking bomb in the heart of London sets the stage for “Fuze,” a taut British crime thriller from director David Mackenzie. Written by Ben Hopkins, the feature stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sam Worthington. As the military and police scramble to evacuate the city when a World War II bomb is unearthed at a bustling construction site, chaos unfolds across London’s streets.

Julia Jackman wrote and directed this adaptation of Isabel Greenberg’s bestselling graphic novel, “The One Hundred Nights of Hero.” Emma Corrin, Nicholas Galitzine, Maika Monroe, Amir El-Masry, Charli XCX, Richard E. Grant and Felicity Jones star. The movie follows a woman named Cherry (Monroe), whose neglectful husband departs after placing a secret wager to test her fidelity. Along with her sharp-witted maid, Hero (Corrin), Cherry must fend off a dangerously seductive visitor: Manfred (Galitzine).

“The Plague” is an unconventional horror tale about a young boy named Ben (Everett Blunck), who is new to the social structure of an all-boys water polo camp. Other children, under the direction of their cruel peer Jake (Kayo Martin) and with very little adult supervision, alienate shy young Eli (Kenny Rasmussen) by saying he has the titular disease. Things get uncomfortable from there. Joel Edgerton co-stars.

“The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist” explores the intersection of AI development and humanity.  The Focus Features release follows a father-to-be as he tries to figure out what is happening with all this AI insanity, aka the most powerful technology humanity has ever created, and what’s at stake if we get it wrong  Per Variety: “Daniel Roher, the director of ‘Navalny,’ has made a heady documentary that explores the future of artificial intelligence with fearlessly open eyes.”

“Never Have I Ever” star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan returns to Netflix with the high-energy comedy “Best of the Best.” Per the streamer: “Two childhood best friends, Maya and Anjali, join UCLA’s competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team, only to discover that the road to winning the U.S. Championship is far more raucous and cutthroat than they ever imagined.”

Documentary filmmaker Chris Smith keeps his Netflix collaboration going strong after ” Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond” (2017), “Fyre” (2019), “Sr.” (2022), and “Wham!” (2023) with the true crime doc “The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part.” Per the streamer: “In this documentary, a journalist and a detective uncover the truth about a killer whose charm masked a trail of failed marriages and suspicious deaths.”
