Hilary Duff, Ex Mike Comrie’s Son Luca Starts High School

Hilary Duff‘s eldest child, Luca, has started high school.

Duff, 38, posted a photo of her and ex-husband Mike Comrie‘s 14-year-old son on his first day of ninth grade via her Instagram Story on Thursday, September 3. She also offered a glimpse at her daughters Banks, 7, and Mae, 5, as they prepared to return to school. (Duff and husband Matthew Koma share Banks, Mae and daughter Townes, 2.)

Duff and Comrie, 45, welcomed their son in March 2012, less than two years after they exchanged vows. After nearly six years of marriage, the former couple finalized their divorce in 2016.

Following their split, the actress admitted that becoming a mom for the first time came with its challenges. “I didn’t have any friends that had babies yet,” Duff detailed during an episode of the “Motherly” podcast in 2019, noting that the experience felt “isolating” for her. “I don’t remember setting him down for the first three months of life. I knew it was the most important, biggest job in the world, but it looks very different once you’re just in the household with the baby by yourself all the time.”

Hilary Duff has welcomed four children with Mike Comrie and Matthew Koma over the years. The actress became a mom in March 2012 when she gave birth to her and then-husband Comrie’s son, Luca. Duff and the former professional ice hockey player separated in 2014, nearly four years after their California wedding. Their divorce was finalized in 2016. […]

Duff has also spoken about her approach to discussing Comrie with Luca.

“We talk about [him] often,” she told Grazia in 2022. “I like to tell him about how I met his father, about the good times we spent together, about the greatest joy when I found out I was pregnant and how his father and I coped with pregnancy. It is a very sweet thing.”

Duff gushed about being “very involved” in her children’s lives as they each find their own interests. “[Luca] wants to know funny things I did at his age, the times I got in trouble. He’s at home with us every other day, so I can’t tell him every night but twice a week on average,” she said.

Duff added: “I like to play with them and listen to them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m also the one who imposes discipline in the house. It’s all fun and games until they cross certain limits.”

More recently, Duff discussed the different dynamics in her home.

“Oh my God, [we’re] chaotic as ever but the best,” she shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March. “We’re having fun.”

Duff also offered an update on what her four kids are up to.

“We have a span. We have a teenager [Luca] and a 2-year-old [Townes] and two in between, so it’s a lot of different things. It depends on the time of day, really,” she shared. “In the morning, we’re heavy into Bluey. It’s a great show. Honestly, sometimes I think it’s soothing for our teenager. He gets kind of enthralled in it. I get it. It’s peaceful.”
